Can someone really answer this question?

I've heard some half baked stories about "quotas". But what is the real reason why potentially the greatest South African batsman for three generations is playing for England?
Someone in South Africa is surely hanging their head in shame.

A good question, and a combination of factors..

    1) Quotas, unignorable.. Cricket in South Africa yearns to be a multi cultural entity, and while we won't be seeing the Zimbabwe'esque mistreatment of players, the fast tracking of coloured players both at school and national level causes controversy and players like Thami Tsolekile to be promoted when perhaps they shouldn't have been.. What I hope now is that Pietersen will be so good for England, that never again will such talent be allowed to leave the Rainbow nation, as someone in South Africa realizes they are missing out on the player of a lifetime..

    2) Perhaps the most vital factor in all this is that when Pietersen left South Africa, he wasn't actually very good.. He was primarily an offie who could hold a bat.. Something big happened when he arrived at Nottinghamshire under Clive Rice.. He was a good player, but not the kind of person who would cause uproar if he left.. Until we saw him play this winter, not many in South Africa were too fussed about the guy (apart from the fact he picked up the "whingeing pom" trait rather quickly)

    3) The Rand at the time would have encouraged him (as well as many other professionals to leave for somewhere he could earn more money).. I'm going to South Africa because the cost of things is cheaper, no doubt loads go the other way because they can earn more in England..

I hope that clears some things up from someone who has possibly experience of both sides of the coin..

yet Graeme Smith, De Villiers, Kallis, Rudolph, Pollock the list goes on and on are??

While I agree with your point that the quota system cannot be defended in a country that should be free of racial bracketing by now, its hard to imagine things being that bad when the vast majority of cricketers are white and happy to keep playing..

I'm not even sure of that. As has been said, an offie who couldn't really bat. Then the trent bridge pixie powder got to work and here we have it!!!

It's quite shocking that he wasn't anything special with the bat until he came to England. Sure, he's not technically perfect, but jesus he is a good batsman. It just seems strange to me that it wouldn't show until he got over here.

Think he took 4 wickets too, albeit for 140-odd.

What's happened to his little offies?

Yeah well, I get the impression from the others that he was used primarily as a bowler who could bat. Now he got 470+ runs at 55 this series, Which was a good 10 runs higher than the next guy. I don't get how someone who could be a good as bat as that wouldn't have been doing it all his career.
