Indian domestic season 2005-06

The surprise package this season will be Karnataka. Their academy side has won a tournament in Australia, facing a Kiwi side with Bond and Oram playing. Another team to watch will be Maharashtra- with Bahutule, Kulkarni and Munaf, their bowling now has some power to challenge the big guns- even Mumbai. One can't rule out Haryana, the promoted Tier II side, who are equipped with quality fielding and a genuine all-rounder- both lacking in the national side. Uttar Pradesh, another very young side, can do well to improve on their form of last season, though they stand a better chance in OD's than in the first-class matches.

Mumbai's going to suffer the exodus of players this season. They had a few hiccups last season, despite their star players being with them, and now, they're level with the rest. Delhi may flatter to deceive yet again, unless we see a surprise element in that side. Gujarat have been impressive last season, and their opening bowlers Sid Trivedi and more so Lalit Patel will have batting sides on their toes. Bengal may be in danger of relegation yet again, but don't expect Services to last too long- they were lucky to be promoted by the toss of a coin.

The Indian fans are a bit too busy discussing the Super Series, the Chappell-Ganguly spat and the BCCI bungles. Let's look at the forthcoming Irani Trophy instead, shall we?

Gautam Gambhir has performed decently for India as a Test opener and is just right for ODI's, but what he can do as captain is yet to be seen. He's captained the Indian Emerging Team for the disastrous tour of SL in 2003, but otherwise, he's not a regular. Dheeraj Jadhav of Maharashtra is the obvious choice as a partner, but why were four openers picked? Do they really need so many? Dumb. The team needs fast bowlers and all-rounders, and they go about picking prospects who don't stand a chance of making the Indian side by a long way. Hopefully, neither will make the XI, but now Niraj Patel is playing as an opener for Gujarat and in the middle-order for other teams.

The selectors seem to be bankrupt of ideas to go back to Parthiv Patel as a wicketkeeper. There are better wicketkeeper-batsmen than him, and also better specialist keepers too. By the way, don't you already have Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni waiting? Try to make the Rest Of India side genuinely the Rest Of India and not a bunch of extras, won't you?

The selection of Ramesh Powar was not too bad, but there are other all-rounders available. No doubt he's done well with the ball (he was the second-highest wicket-taker last season) and scored 3 over 50 ending with an average of 29, but Baroda's Yusuf Pathan and Rajesh Pawar were worth a try too. With no other all-rounders in the scene, the team will be short of bowlers or batsmen, depending on the selection.

Watch out for Vikram Singh- the Punjab pacer is well-built, fast and very, very aggressive. He can make a difference in this match, but Railways have faced him before so they won't be all at sea. While most of the Rest Of India players are extras, this youngster is a genuine India prospect. But why are Irfan Pathan and Joginder Sharma out? Not only is one of them an India regular, they're both good swing bowlers and they can score more than a few useful runs. Bhajji's outbursts may not have plaeased the selectors, but he's a better choice than one of the other spinners. Unless Ramkumar has a genuine chance of playing for India.

The Railways selection shouldn't be too bad, but Bangar should play as a full-time bowler. He's capable of holding a line and length for a long time, and can add a few variations to unsettle the batsmen. He's a good support bowler for Yadav and Karthik, and coupled with his batting, he can be a more-than-useful ODI selection. Karthik will have a lot to do to convince the selectors, but he seems to be in better form when playing for teams other than India. Opener Amit Pagnis, who has often got himself out when he's in good nck, must keep up his good form of last season to help Railways. As always, a lot will depend on JP Yadav.

Railways are more likely to win, given their versatility, and they play well as a team. However, VR Singh and Ramesh Powar will prove to be a surprise package here. All worth a watch.

Will this match be shown on television? Already, Doordarshan Sports have been showing local 20-20 matches and a few club OD's too. That's not too bad.

Ummm...hold on there...is there yet another Challenger series this year? Read today's Times Of India; there's one lined up in the middle of November. They have decided on the coaches for the three teams.

It is actually gonna happen in the middle of October and all the big stars, apart from Rahul and Sehwag are expected to take part. Sachin is in as well. BTW, Sadagoppan Ramesh has moved to Kerala this season. That should be interesting.

Thanks for the update. Let's just keep this thread going, shall we? The Challenger selections are, in a word, dumb.

Rest got off to a good start, with Jadhav making 53 and Gambhir, 47. The others crumbled, as they folded up for 223. Parida got 4 wickets, Harvinder 3 and Karthik 2. Yadav and Bangar got just one between them, but still, that's a job well done by the pack.

yup, jadhav is probably the only one from this group that might deserve a berth in the national squad right now, but don't know if he'll get that.

Openers: Sehwag, Gambhir
Middle-Order Batsmen: Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman, Ganguly
Wicketkeeper: Karthik
Fast Bowlers: Pathan, Zaheer
Spinners: Harbhajan, Kumble

That leaves room for 3 or 4 players. Two should be batsman, and while Kaif and Yuvraj are the most deserving, Jadhav would be a good backup opener which the team lacks. After that, you can choose from Balaji, Nehra, Agarkar, VRV Singh and RP Singh(1 or 2).

which makes it even more important for ganguly to perform .. if he doesnt, kaif or yuvraj might be in danger of losing their spot to a non-performer, and that is simply wrong and unacceptable

I think the pitch for the Irani Trophy is a bit of a dust bowl given how the spinners, esp. the offies, have been doing well.

Murali Karthik has been a surprise package wit the bat, scoring a (relatively) rapid 96, while Yere Goud has been there for really, really long and has just got past 60. Can't complain- this has worked, as Railways now have the first-innings lead over Rest, and are at 279/8. Powar has got 5 wickets, but there have been no less than FOURTEEN no-balls. Sreesanth stepped over the danger area once too often, and has been kept out of the attack.

It's now just a formality- Railways will win with ease. They have bundled out Rest of India for a mere 137, and now require just 49 to win. Karthik and Parida took 3 wickets each. Neither seem to be very good on their own, but they combine well, with the rest of the attack.

Fans may complain that India's batting cupboard is looking bare, but you can't expect too much. This Rest of India side is a motley bunch of half-baked newbies, not the best of the rest, as it's supposed to be. They were facing a full-strength Ranji champion side, who played like a team and combined well to come close to forcing a victory.

Railways should be the side India should look to emulate. They are very much the New Zealand of our domestic scene.

Railways have won. Not surprisingly. Let's just hope the Challenger series has something excitign to show.

Let's hope it is actually televised. Weird week this one, the Rest of India lost to the Ranji Champs and the Rest of the World lost to the World Champs.

As I said earlier, Rest of India was not a full-strength selection, rather a bunch of extras who wouldn't stand a chance of making an Indian bench. The Rest of World side, however, was a major disappointment.

In that case, looking at one-dayers, how would this combination stack up compared to the current Indian selection?
  • Pagnis
  • Bangar (RMF- change)
  • Kaif
  • Dravid (C)
  • Raina (OB)
  • Yuvraj
  • JP Yadav (RM-new)
  • Irfan (LFM?-new)
  • Ratra (WK)
  • Harbhajan (OB)
  • VR Singh (RFM)
This looks a stronger fielding unit. JP Yadav can open the bowling and bowl two overs, then come back later when the ball is older. Bangar can do what Balaji's been doing as an old-ball bowler. Harbhajan and VR Singh bowl their full ten. The batting lineup may be divided into partnership-builders (Pagnis, Kaif, Dravid, Raina, Yuvraj) and attackers (Bangar, JP Yadav, Irfan), who can complement each other well. They may combine better than the current Indian side, even if they lack the 'star value' we associate with them.

Let's look at the Challenger series. The selection of India Seniors was a good one, though they could do without Ganguly, given his weaknesses on the field and between the wickets. Moreover, there's no point playing JP Yadav, Irfan and Vidyut in the same side- all three of them can contribute in more than one skill, enough for their teams, but they won't be put to much use here. Oh, they can't look beyond Agarkar, can they?

Now look at the selections for India-A and India-B. As many as four U-19 players have been picked. Not much is known about these promising youngsters, or whether they're even relevant for the team in which they play. Rajesh Pawar, Yusuf Pathan, Sanjay Bangar and Joginder Sharma may consider themselves unlucky to miss out. And of course, when you find Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik in the scene yet again, you know the selectors seem bankrupt of ideas when it comes to wicketkeeping- there are better keepers around, and also one better wicketkeeper-batsman who plays for Punjab but often misses out. Good to see VR Singh in one of the teams.

That team looks good but I honestly won't mind Dhoni in there. He is not the best keeper but his hitting ability may be useful, IF he proves to be good against good bowling.
