As far as I know the answer is no, there have been a couple of books where imaginary matches are played, more as a side light though. They usually have a famous player pick the team and then feed information into a computer, I have read a couple of these, but that is about it I think.

here is one you may enjoy 'The Ten Greatest Test Teams' by Tom Graveney.

He nominates and then ranks the ten greatest Test teams in post war Cricket. Though Graveney was not happy with the Computers final rankings.

Thank you very much, you've been extremely helpful. Do you have a link to any of those sites you mentioned?

Actually they are all out of books, ABE is the best one I think, for finding books at a cheap price.

Here are some books you may find interesting.

The Ten Greatest Test Teams by Tom Graveney 1988 published by Sidgwick & Jackson
The Top 100 and The 1st X1 by Phillip Derriman 1987 published by The Fairfax Library
Cricketers' Carnival by Learnie Constantine 1950 published byStanley Paul (in this book Constantine picks a Contempory 11 to play an 11 of old timers. he produces score cards for the match)
