Probably Gary Keedy of Lancs (SLA), but he's a bit of a bunny so is unlikely to ever find favour with Big Dunc. Same deal with Jason Brown at Northants (off spin), although Brown hasn't had a great year so far. Both must be into their 30s too, so hardly the future.

I guess Graeme Swann is probably the next in line. For me he's a better spinner than Batty (the official no 2) & at least as good a batter.

Chris Schofield.

From one of the first twelve England central contracts as their new Shane Warne, to being dumped by his second division county and going back to try and get a game for Littleborough.

Keedy has an FC fifty which makes him no worse than any of the three seamers presently picked.

If we were go with a 2-2-Fred split in India & Pakistan this winter, we would omit Jones or Hoggard (Hoggard I'd guess, reversing etc) and then would could afford another non-batsman.

When you read that list, it's easy to understand how Giles is no. 1 choice.

What a bunch of pie-throwers!

yea fletcher seems to like doing that when we go to the sub-continent but its more likelt he will go for that 2-2 split in India rather than Pakistan.

Going back to topic, Keedy is definately the 2nd best spinner here but Swann will probably take up the mantle when Gilo goes off the scene....

In all honesty, they're probably not much worse than what we have to choose from here, outside of MacGill and Warne.

gah, so tempting to go for chris.........

I'd have voted keedy, if my finger hadnt slipped and clicked on swann..... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

though keedy is helped by the spin friendly pitches at old trafford.... personally i feel if england are going to play 2 spinners i'd have an off spinner with giles (actually, personally i wouldnt have giles, but thats not gonna happen).... just prefer to have the spinners going two different ways, more troublesome for the batsmen to get into a rythm....

Hmm, we can't be having this sort of talk going on.

Don't you know it's impossible for an Aussie to criticise any Australian cricketer, and especially to rank them as equals of English cricketers!!! ;)

Strangely enough, I agree with you - the last world-class spinner we had was probably Deadly Underwood. Then again, you have a thing in Australia called 'summer' which lasts for much of the year - and we have a thing called 'April', after which it all goes downhill.

It probably explains why we have a thing called a 'back-up seam bowler' too.

If there is one specialism where age should be firmly ignored it is spin bowling IMO, especially finger spin bowling. Of course fast bowlers benefit from experience but unless they're Courteney Walsh the experience is usually more than countered by loss of pace, injuries etc.

Not to mention that most spin bowlers have finally managed to learn how to hold a bat by their mid-late thirties 8-)

And unless they're something VERY special, the test arena is quite possible not the best place to gain that experience.

Sounds about right. Now that the CC is up & running again, I would imagine the likes of Batty, Swann, Keedy & maybe even Dawson are playing for the 2nd spinner's place, which isn't an encouraging thought.

Someone who's not been mentioned yet is Doshi. He probably isn't in the frame this year unles he takes about 30 wickets between now and the ened of the season, but maybe one for the future.

Apart from Warnie and Mcgill none of the aussie badspinners are any better. Giles isn't as bad as people say.

i've watched a bit of keedy recently(most of which in 20-20 cricket), he certainly doesnt look like the worst spinner, probably marginally better than giles if you ask me, but neither turn the ball significantly. swann i watched him bowl in his only game in SA a long time ago, and was quite impressed that he turned the ball a fair bit on a wicket that wasnt exactly a big turner. havent seen much of him since though. certainly though batty and dawson are both rubbish and i cant believe that the english selectors still havent realised that batty is not good enough to make the zimbabwe side.
