Sachin Tendulkar - when he collects his passport
Yeah, this injury is an elaborate ploy. He's going to spend four years "rehabilitating" over here, then win us the 2009 Ashes!Langeveldt said:Sachin Tendulkar - when he collects his passport
Playing as a bowler !!!!!Barney Rubble said:Yeah, this injury is an elaborate ploy. He's going to spend four years "rehabilitating" over here, then win us the 2009 Ashes!
He better start living up to that tag soon, thoughRichard said:England's best batsman currently is obviously Andrew Strauss and anyone who thinks otherwise is insane.
Equally people were insane to think it wasn't Thorpe between his final return and the end of last summer, Vaughan in 2002 and Thorpe (again) in 2000-2001\02.
is there not a difference between 'best' and ' best performing' batsman thoughRichard said:England's best batsman currently is obviously Andrew Strauss and anyone who thinks otherwise is insane.

Everyone's entitled to not live-up to something for a single game.Steulen said:He better start living up to that tag soon, though
What is there to batting other than performing...?Swervy said:is there not a difference between 'best' and ' best performing' batsman though
Well, seeing as you've just said that Trescothick (4823 @ 45.07) isn't a success...Richard said:What is there to batting other than performing...?
Nope, because there's more to performing than the scorebook average.marc71178 said:Well, seeing as you've just said that Trescothick (4823 @ 45.07) isn't a success...
No there isnt. At the end of the day thats all that matters.Richard said:Nope, because there's more to performing than the scorebook average.
eh!? you gone insane? It's not the be all and end all, but its by far the most important thing in a batsmans career..Richard said:No, it's not.
There's so much more to being a good batsman it's untrue.
Your overall career record in one format isn't really that important.
too many people care about it because they're being made to care about it.if the career average pops up on the screen everytime you watch someone bat youd expect that.Langeveldt said:eh!? you gone insane? Surely if it wasn't that important, nobody would care about it..
even though this isnt referred to me, i think its easily possible for someone in the same side with a lower average to be better. fact is that some players boost their record against poor bowling attacks-youhana, and others can be better in certain conditions than others-hayden, gayle etc. as i said earlier, consistency is the key.Barney Rubble said:So, Richard, you're saying that if you took two batsmen, who have played the same number of Tests, for the same team, and one averages 50, the other 40, there is a possibility that, in some circumstances, you would say that the guy who averages 40 is the better batsman?
Surely if averages don't tell you much then this is true - but this is a crazy concept which should never be true, and defeats the point of why averages were invented in the first place, so where does that leave you?
that is true in my opinion, however say trescothinks average of 45 came from a period of about 50 straight matches, then i assume you would say that it would indeed show that he was good?Richard said:The fluctuations, ups and downs and all sorts of things in different conditions etc. tell far more than a single lump figure.
