What has happened to kaifs batting?

He looks to be in really bad form lately,

hasnt scored a 100 for a while and not to mention 50.
His fielding is superb but he wont be kept in the indian team only for his fielding he has to produce results with his batting as well which he hasnt done for a while,

    A possible replacement you think?
Bob is very insane stay away from him

he had 1 game in the icc champions trophy, scored a decent 27. in the natwest challenge before that he was arguably indias best player when he scored 2 50s.

I have this feeling that he will perform really bad in the triangular series.
    Lets see.

Kaif's form doesnt really worry me that much but I think the real question is- when's the last time yuvraj hit a century? or even a 50 or a 40?

I agree, Yuvraj is more worrying to me. His last ton was in Sydney against Australia at the start of 2004, a brilliant knock. But he's far too inconsistent. I can't remember too many 40+ knocks since then, but If I'm mistaken someone correct me.

Kaif was very solid last year, however I really want Kaif to become consistent from here on end, because I see him flying the flag for the future of Indian cricket moreso than any other young player, including Pathan and Yuvraj and whomever else. I know he has the talent, and I'd love to see him rack up a ODI ton this series.

I think Kaif's problem is his strike rate. He hits too many balls straight to the fielders. Other than that, his bat swing is not the same as it was during the Natwest Series or the World Cup. It just seems as though he is content to just push the ball, instead of actually going through with the stroke. I know it may be some new style or something, but I really can't see that being successful.
We miss you, Fardin. :(. RIP.

Yuvraj has done this before, though.
He's had a couple of phrases in his career: only scored 2 half-centuries in his first 22 games and averaged 22; averaged 36.76 in his next 51 innings; since that WACA game where he made 47 amid the dross he's averaged less than 24 in 30 innings.
I'd hope it's not going to be too long before he comes good again.

The real problem is the composition of the side, as well as the way all of them bat. Kaif is the lowest in the hierarchy of seven batsmen, all of whom are trying to play for a long innings. In particular, Ganguly, Mongia, Dravid, Laxman and a struggling Yuvraj/Sehwag spend a lot of time just trying to rake up a big score- after all, they have to play to their selections. On a good day, Kaif never gets a fair chance to build an innings, since already enough time has been spent by others. Kaif often bats when the team is in serious trouble, so if he fails, the team fails. Little wonder then, he's often blamed for a lot of the team's batting collapses, when even the numbers one through six do nothing of note. It's not possible for a specialist batsman (or even one who isn't) to maintain a healthy average from such a position. Had there been more power players in the batting lineup, they could complement these grafters well and the likes of Kaif wouldn't look half as bad. The dashers could dash ahead, while Kaif and the other grafters could take their time and stay on a lot longer.

Another problem is the amount of one-day cricket he has played. ODI's demand he scores at a rapid pace. Sometimes, he has to bat out an explosive Klusener-like innings, which is beyond him. He often ends up playing a few rash strokes just to add extra runs- consequently, he doesn't last too long. Moreover, he doesn't turn up for too many FC matches for his state side when he's on the ODI bus, so he may not get used to the habit of playing a long, patient innings. He doesn't even play the ODI spinners wisely, as you might have noticed. A long break from ODI's and an extended run for UP in Ranji will do him a lot of good and he may return a superior ODI player, and even boost his chances of making the Test side.

I used to agree with you Arjun, and stated that Kaif batting at 7 was just stupidity. The position does not fit him at all. But recently he has been pushed up the order a little (albeit only 6 in the current game going on, where he played pretty well - 34 from 48) and just hasn't been going on with it, or even getting those starts sometimes. I really thought the first ODI against Sri Lanka was the best time for him to prove his talent, and bat with Dravid guiding India to around 240 to 250.

I hope, if he gets an opportunity in the top 5, that he scores this series. I really do.
