England - Champions Trophy

Three Squad Changes:

OUT Paul Collingwood
IN Rikki Clarke

OUT Michael Vaughan
IN Owais Shah

OUT Craig White
IN Dominic Cork

Shah in for Vaughan is fair enough. I assume that White must be injured - Corky's a fair swap - but...

Rikki Clarke Yeah, I wonder if he would be playing if he was a Durham player?

Clarke's bowling is not up to it yet, and he's not a specialist batsman. ACADEMY? Hello... what else is it there for?.

Let's run through the choices... Jamie Troughton, who's actually a batsman? Kyle Hogg, who can bowl? Darren Maddy, Who has performed very effectively in both disciplines this year? Bilal Shafayat or Kadeer Ali, who had taken apart the Indians in the summer?

No. Wrong Counties. This is past a joke.

Note - could someone else write this up as an article as I don't think that I'll be able to avoid shedloads of vitriole. Cheers...

I think that I mentioned the other day that a ton in the right company is worth a season of achievement.

Last week, Derbyshire, Rod Marsh, 101* - it was very predictable.

ODI tournament, just about fair enough. Ashes? No chance. Academy? Certainly.

As far as me writing it up, I have seen the Surrey Bias for twenty years longer than you, Neil.

For me, the vitriol would be accompanied by lashings of bile.

Perhaps someone else could oblige?

Rikki Clarke Averages 52, not a Batsman is he

Troughton should be considered, kyle hogg has done nothing for Lancs, Kadeer Ali has not appered for Worcestershire this season Shafatyat lacks something

He actually averages 26.5, so no he's not a batsman.

If they were looking for a batsman who bowls a little, Adam Hollioake is a better bet for sure, but what about Bell, Wagh or Troughton, all as capable as Clarke with the ball, and better batsmen. Then there's Solanki, Butcher, Ealham, McGrath or, although he won't play Internationals again, Croft?

Oh, and as for suggesting Hick and Smith, I don't think so.

And, what does Shafayat lack. He may be a bit raw, but looks very exciting to me.

Ben Smith is class Batsman he is one of the leading runs scorers in the national League More then Troughton

...and is Hick still in contention for an England berth? Isn't he just a "has-been" who was actually a "never-was" and a "never-will-be"?

Hick is class - in lower-class cricket.

I remember when he smashed that championship 400 - we had just gone to 4 day games - and crikey he looked good.

He is one of those people who never quite made the transition to full-fledged test star. A couple of good knocks, a string of failures, out, recalled, a couple of good knocks ad nauseum.

Remind you of anyone else?

All together now....

Ben Smith is class but because he is 30 does not mean that he cannot play for England, A lot of Players in the past have made the debut at least 30.

Troughton is a Very good Players but at 24 he will not get much better

30 is too old to start playing Internatioal Cricket, especially when you look at the current ages of the England middle order - young blood is needed in there, not another good county player who will never have a career at the highest level.

Who was the last Englishman to make an International debut aged over 30?

There's no way you'd push for Smith for England if he played for any other county.

Mark Ramprakash!!!

And Marc's right regarding Ben Smith. He's a solid county batsman but nothing else, and barring bubonic plague striking again he's not going to play. And even then there's Surrey U12s.

Ben Smith's one day average is 30.05. That doesn't warrant England consideration!

This year it's 52.42 due to 8 not outs in 22 innings. And 10.60 in the B&H Cup.

34.90 in 2001, and jammed around 30 the rest of the time. England? Yeah, definitely...

The way English cricketers are getting injured, the selectors must be running out of options!
English cric are just too delicate

I thought Englands policy was to select players over the age of 30? so why not Ben Smith..when he comes down here to play for Central Districts he has shown that he has a good technique.
