Thorpe to retire.

Run like Inzy

U19 12th Man
It's really sad to see thorpe go. He never got as much praise as he deserved. I think judging on his ability both attack and defend he was the greatest english batsmen of the 90's. Stewart and Hussain were agressive, Atherton was to defensive. Thorpe was class.
England should have let him play the Ashes. He never really got a second chance. After all he was the only English batsmen in the decade to make a hundred on debut and that too against the Aussies. I think they could have dropped Bell and still played Pietersen.

what is his chances of playing for the blues that remote???
Yeh they made it quite clear that hes unlikely to get a game unless injury occurs or players get badly out of form. Bit like the sean ervine case we have over here in the west

naaaa for the the one person who could have made way for thorpe for the wrest of the summer was Giles, i see no reason why Vaughan cant work with 4 seamers..

Key, Joyce or even Collingwood.

Yes it would be Key wouldnt it which is not a good prospect, cant see him making any runs against Australia.
Thorpes retriement is very bad news as we really needed him on thursday and i would hopw he would have been back for the 2nd test.

And just when he had the opportunity to push for a test place, in place, of bell
Erm what?

Based on one innings when a genuine all time great was bowling one of the top spells of a generation, he should be dropped?

I said push for a spot. Out of that line up now that peitersen has scored that 50 i cant see the english selectors dropping him any time soon. If somone was to be dropped for thorpe, i believe the selctors would chose bell.

The way poor old Trescothick looked i think his place would have been under threat if not after the first test maybe after the 2nd or 3rd. Now with the possible replacements his place is probalby safe

Which is why the selectors not only dropped Bell, but left him out of the SA tour after his debut 70?

Replying to Kendall's post

Spot on there i think.. i feel that ATM the unsafest spot in the English team is that of Trescothick.

the thing about England these days is that they are following the Aussie's example and staying loyal to a group of players [ as the recent retainment of Gillespie when kaspa seemed the better man shows ] who they think will become world class.

You get the feeling that the English middle order is somewhat sorted for the next maybe 5 years [Bell/Pietersen/Flintoff/Jones] so they wont want to mess with that lineup in tht period.

well at that time last season you could say it was fairly justifiable in Bell not being included in the sqaud to SA.

Fairly justifiable how?

He was coming off a Darren Lehmann-like run gluttonary for Warwickshire!

Today again proved that Thorpe should have been in the side and i fully agree with Micheal Atherton that Pieterson should have been in the side against Bangladesh at the start of the summer and we could have had Thorpe at 4 and Pieterson at 5 which would have been so much better

Much like Hick and Ramprakash probably were for their counties.

Tresco and Vaughn were not such prolific county batsman yet Fletcher saw something in them.

To me, county cricket is not the be all and end all. Bell seems like a little choirboy and a rabbit in headlights to me. Really soft. I feel he will be proved to be the weak link in this decent English side.

Are they really the next best choices? An allrounder as one of the options for a specialist batting spot?

Wow. Not alot of depth there. Who's fourth in line, Chris Adams?

err hussain was most certainly not aggressive.
Agreed.

Hussein was a real grinder and quite frankly, tedious to watch.

I consider him pretty lucky to get as many caps as he did, as his talent was minimal and his record was pretty average.

Bell has had two Test failure. Hick and Ramprakash racked up close on a hundred between them. I think you're being ridiculously overly harsh - it's not as if the rest of the line up haven't struggled anyway

Absolutely. Can't believe he ever made a Test 200 - can't remember who it was against, must have been one of the weak teams.
