    Ganguly politics

Here's an excerpt from an interview with Ganguly a few years ago:
    -------
Question:Is it true that you refused to carry drinks onto the field early in your career?

Ganguly: I don't know where this story has come from. We had a manager on the trip to Australia in 1992, Mr. Ranbir Singh. He is probably the worst guy I have ever seen in my life. It is a shame that we have had managers like him for India on long tours. He was a shame, a shame to Indian cricket.

Luckily we have much better people now. That is the reason things like this don't happen against youngsters. I think he had some problem with Dalmiya (Jagmohan) and since I was from Bengal, he took it out on me.

Even schoolboys don't behave like this. I thought it was a shame to have him on the tour. For such long tours you need people of strong character and mind to look after the boys.
    ------

This man, Mr. Ranbir Singh Mahenra is now the PRESIDENT of the BCCI! I don't think he will be doing any favors for ganguly, as the following article suggests:
    ------
How can Ganguly play, asks BCCI chief

    rediff.com Cricketdesk | April 14, 2005 11:15 IST

The de facto stay on the six-ODI ban imposed on India skipper Saurav Ganguly has created a piquant situation -- Who is the captain of the side for the rest of the series?

When the ICC verbally communicated, Tuesday April 12, that Ganguly was to be banned for six ODIs, the board and the national selectors did not even wait for the official written communication.

Reacting with the sort of speed it has not shown before, the selection committee met, and decided that Sridharan Sriram of Tamil Nadu would be brought into the side to replace the Indian skipper.

The committee also decided that Rahul Dravid would lead India, with Virender Sehwag as his deputy, for the remaining ODIs in this series.

That was on the presumption that Ganguly would not be eligible to play. Now he is -- so now what?

Chairman of national selectors Kiran More told rediff.com Thursday (April 14) morning that he was "not aware" of the developments.

"I have not received any official word on Ganguly's eligibility," More said from Kanpur. "As and when I have further information, we will decide."

A further twist was added by BCCI president Ranbir Singh Mahindra. Asked for reactions on the development, Mahindra told rediff.com: "If Ganguly is not there in the squad, then how can he play in Kanpur?"

Mahendra's point is that since the national selectors had dropped Ganguly and inducted Sriram into the side, the Indian captain is not at this point in time any longer a part of the 15-member team list.

Given that, the BCCI chief points out, he cannot be included in the playing eleven, let alone lead the side in Kanpur.
    ------

The selectors can reconvene, drop Sriram, bring back Ganguly, even reinstate him as captain if the committee so desires.Given Ganguly's recent form, given that both his batting, and his captaincy, have slipped, does he deserve to be reinstated?

If there was one thing the all-terrain Mahendra could do for the benefit of Indian cricket, he could encourage the newly-promoted Haryana Ranji side and maybe even eep the doors open for Sunny Singh and Joginder Sharma, because there's nothing else he can do.

Isn't this guy an allrounder? i haven't seen him nor have i seen Sunny singh but my understanding is that they are all allrounders, if thats true then one of them should play in Indian team as i would like India to play with 4 specialist bowlers and 1 allrounder.PLaying with 7 specialist batsmen looks stupid to me, don't know how Indian fans feel about it though.

I have not met anyone who has seen Sunny Singh.

There is a tendency on this forum to pass high flown judgements based on scores in non-descript first class games and newspaper reports by reporters who themselves rarely go to watch the games.

    Can you beat it.

    - There is a match between two mediocre teams.

    - Some cub reporter picks up the scores from the ticker-tape and weaves a story around it to fill the one and a half column of the next days paper.

    - An OEACC (over enthusiastic arm chair critic) reads the report goes through the score sheet and writes a critically-analytical post on this forum. Embellishing it with, I think, in my opinion, I am sure, I declare, I am confident etc etc.

Good question you ask.....Has anyone seen Sunny Singh ??

I mentioned a Gurkripal Singh Bajwa in an earlier post to be considered as an all rounder for India. I am surprised no one has yet asked who is this guy. I am sure they are still dtruggling with their search engines trying to locate this future legend of Indian cricket.

Dropping Ganguly I think is justifiable for obvious reasons. But how people can Villify and demeonize a sportsman who has served his country is pathetic !

Sriram used to be a left-arm spinner several years ago, but he was never good enough for a strike bowler. He worked hard on his batting and has been a consistent run-getter for TN for years, but he still bowls left-arm spin once in a while, but not regularly.

As for Sunny Singh, I had first seen him in action in a match between India U-19 and Pakistan U-19. He bowled first-change and got a few wickets for not too many, and kept a tight line and length- VR Singh, the new-ball bowler, bowled lots of wides. He's never been used regularly as a bowler by his State side these days, but I mentioned his name simply because he's from the same state as the current BCCI chief and as a player, he's not too bad and by backing him, the all-terrain Mahendra will have done something good.
