The West Indies squad to face South Africa in the 1st Test:

Wavell Hinds, Devon Smith, Donavon Pagon, Daren Ganga, Shivnarine Chanderpaul (capt), Narsingh Deonarine, Ryan Hinds, Courtney Browne (wk, vice-capt), Corey Collymore, Pedro Collins, Dwight Washington, Daren Powell, Jerome Taylor, Reon King.

I hate to say it, but odds on for an innings defeat.

Apparently Lara did the stand-up thing and responded to his contract offer by posing that the other 6 get picked too. The WICB didn't like the response. No Lara. Bye bye West Indies cricket. :@

Expected XI:

WW Hinds
DS Smith
D Ganga
S Chanderpaul (C)
NO Deonarine
RO Hinds
CO Browne (wk)
DB Powell
PT Collins
JE Taylor
CD Collymore

Hmmm...really weak West Indian side. With the likes of Pagon, Deonarine, Washington and Darren Powell (any relation to Ricardo?) in the squad, the inexperience will definately show. Lara, Sarwan, Bradshaw and Gayle in particular are massive blows IMO, this dispute is doing absolutely nothing to promote the game in the country that will eventually hold the 2007 World Cup!

i dont understand there were better players availble besides the 7 excluded and they werent picked

To be honest, I hope they get whipped real bad. That's the first team I've had no confidence in the WI or wanted them to do well. I'm sure a lot of other fans feel this way too. Not a nice way to get support back for the team and to encourage sponsors.

on a more positive note, its good to see darren powell in the side, i was quite impressed with him on the tour of india.

I think it was always going to be the case that Lara would only accept selection if the other players involved were selected aswell.

As it stands, I cannot see the West Indies making it to the 4th day...even if it is South Africa who haven't exactly brilliant in tests over the last year.

Whatever it takes!!!
Boy do the springboks get lucky........ First a Zim side who had no idea what they were doing and now the weakest ever Windies side..... Even with Lara in the side, I would have thought that they would have struggled. This, is just a walkover.

It's pretty awful to see all right. TBH I thought both sides would get round the table & thrash out some kinda compromise before it came to this.

Shiv Chanderpaul has a lotta responsibility on his shoulders, I've no doubt he'll cope admirably because he strikes me as one of life's solid citizens. Whether fashioning silk purses from sow's ears is his thing is another question.....

He may score runs, but do you seriously think he'll make a good captain?
I can't recall the number of time I've seen Chanderpaul bat with a young player who's getting lip from the opposition and he just stands there at the other end without saying a word. On other occasions he's seen the young player attempt ridiculous shots and guess what, he just stands at the non-striker's end without saying a word.

I don't think this is a terrible side actually. It's not capable of beating South Africa, but I can see them going into the 4th and possibly 5th day. The bowling doesn't look too bad, as all those bowlers are capable of taking wickets. Daren Powell has fallen away badly from the season start, but he was bowling superbly then. Jerome Taylor looks good again and can swing the ball both ways. Collins is a good bowler when he puts himself into it. Dwight Washington is not Test standard yet and IMO chucks. Reon King and Corey Collymore are experienced and can bowl at the highest level.

The batting is much weaker, though Devon Smith and Wavell Hinds have made scores against Test class opposition. Daren Ganga got a century the last time he was in Guyana and was playing as well as he probably ever has until he got injured a week ago. Ryan Hinds is in the form of his life and batting beautifully. Donavan Pagon and Narsingh Deonarine are very talented, though I believe only the latter is ready.

Personally I would have chosen Marlon Samuels for my middle order, as he looks in sublime touch at the moment. He would be in my team a long time before I picked Pagon.

My team had all been "fit":

CH Gayle
DS Smith
RR Sarwan
BC Lara (C)
S Chanderpaul
RO Hinds
RD Jacobs (wk)
D Mohammed
DB Powell
PT Collins
CD Collymore

I've not been impressed with Mohammed lately, but how on earth can you go into a Bourda Test without a specialist spinner?! The WICB is ridiculous and they should have they Test status revoked. We need a new governing body.

I guess you've seen him a lot more than me. I have to be honest & say I don't know a lot about his qualities as a leader of men, but he does come across as the sort of player who thrives on adversity.

I wouldn't have said Vaughan would've made as good a skipper as Nasser did as he can seem a bit diffident at times (certainly compared to Nas's bristling intensity), but he has proved to be an equally effective, albeit different, captain. I hope Chanderpaul will grow into the captaincy role.

Actually I still hope he won't have to, but you know what I mean!

I don't see how something won't be sorted out fairly shortly in terms of the sponsorship impasse because neither C&W nor Digicell will gain much value from being promoted by non-international players/a non-competitive team respectively, or being associated with the demise of West Indies cricket in general..

As far as the likely team goes, I assume Pagon will miss out and hope that Taylor won't be rushed back into test cricket. I think Samuels suffered from having limited domestic opportunities prior to the initial squad being named, having made little impact in Australia. If Washington isn't ready, my team would then be:

W Hinds
D Smith
Chanderpaul
Deonarine
Ganga
R Hinds
Browne
D Powell
Collins
Collymore
King

My full-strength team would see Gayle, Lara, Sarwan and Bravo come in for W Hinds, Deonarine, Ganga and Collymore. Though I'd like to pick a spinner at Guyana, I don't know whether any specialist would do much better than a combination of R Hinds, Sarwan and Gayle.

God, we have just had a series of tackling a bunch of club cricketers who don't mean a lot..

Im annoyed, because it doesn't give our players the chance to shine against the very best.. And any decent performances just tend to get cast aside as "irrelevant"..

Fully expect Kallis to hit a lovely 250, and then everyone lay into him because he didn't score it against anyone decent..
