New Zealand cricketer Daryl Tuffey's career appears to be on a knife-edge after two British tourists allegedly filmed him having *** with a Christchurch woman.
Tuffey appeared before the New Zealand Cricket disciplinary board in Christchurch yesterday charged with bringing the game into disrepute.
New Zealand Cricket is revealing few details about the misconduct charge but The Press understands it relates to a video tape filmed by two British men, Paddy Curtis and Archie Brookbank, both aged 19, and shows Tuffey having *** with a Christchurch woman.
Sources told The Press yesterday that the *** was consensual.
The tape was made at a Riccarton flat in November but it became an issue only after the woman's new boyfriend heard of the tape's existence through other sources.
Police said yesterday that they had no involvement in the case and were not investigating.
Curtis and Brookbank were in New Zealand for four months but left the country two weeks ago. They played cricket for the second-grade Riccarton side.
A friend of the young men, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the pair were "immature boys" who made several videos of a ***ual nature during their four-month stay in New Zealand.
Tuffey met the men in November while he was training at the New Zealand Cricket Academy at Lincoln and socialised with the pair when he was in Christchurch throughout December and January, the source said.
Curtis and Brookbank took the tape to pubs around Christchurch, boasting of their efforts and showing it on the screen of their video recorder.
"I do know they were showing (the Tuffey) one to everyone. They would say, `do you know Daryl Tuffey? We've got him on tape'," the source said.
It appears New Zealand Cricket officials became aware of the tape only after the woman's boyfriend, a bar manager, began a relationship with the woman in February.
He discovered the existence of the tape at a farewell party for Curtis and Brookbank at the bar in late February.
The tape was apparently mentioned during the farewell speeches.
The boyfriend yesterday denied his girlfriend was the woman in the video.
He said he knew the English pair and had expelled them from the bar for misbehaviour.
However, another source told The Press the boyfriend became very upset during the farewell speech when it was implied his girlfriend appeared in the videotape. He expelled the two Englishmen from the bar and several other people followed.
The Press attempted to contact Curtis and Brookbank in Sydney yesterday but neither were answering their cellphones.
New Zealand Cricket spokesman Steve Addison said no comment would be made on the allegations until the hearing was finished.
The head of the misconduct inquiry, Hugh Rennie QC, said he had received submissions from New Zealand Cricket and Tuffey over the matter.
"The complaint relates only to Mr Tuffey, does not involve any other New Zealand player, and relates to one matter of off-field conduct. It is alleged to be a matter of serious misconduct."
The inquiry would be complete in about two weeks, Rennie said.
Tuffey, who has played 22 tests and 76 one-day internationals, was dropped from the side during last month's one-day series against Australia after a horror display in his opening over at Auckland
