My post from the NZ Domestic thread:

Well you'd think that Hopkins would beat out Reece Young (who I don't rate) & Bevan Griggs..and I really hope we don't go back to selecting Chris Nevin.

Jeff Wilson & Bradley Scott are probably shoe-in's at this stage. And I guess McCullum will be battling it out with Wiseman for the spinners slot. I reckon the selectors should take a closer look at Nathan McCullum anyway.

Presuming all international's are available for the match, for the Sth team i'd go with:

Astle, Fleming, B.McCullum, Fulton, Papps, C.Martin, Scott, Wilson, McMillan, N.McCullum, Cumming & (then 1 of Shaw, McSkimming or Schwass)

    Nth:

How, Styris, H.Marshall, Taylor, Canning, Mills, Tuffey, Hopkins, Sinclair, Ryder (wildcard as an opener, due to lack of opening depth in the OD's), Vettori & Cairns.

    Peter Fulton for Engelfield.

Hopkins in for one of the North bowlers, he is the second best keeper in the country he will play.

I would fail to see the logic of leaving Hopkins out. Mainly because they took him ahead of Nevin to England & also had him on stand-by during the tour to Australia.

Jesse Ryder was being groomed as an opener by the NZ Academy & I can understand why Wellington have probably told him to earn his spot in the team, but it's not like we've got a huge amount of good openers in the Country right now. We desperately need to be progressing players like Ryder if we want good opening options in the future.

Auckland are doing nothing to help NZ by opening with Richard Jones & Matt Horne. They should be opening with either Horne or Jones & then another youth player.

i think graeme aldridge should be a definite starter - he has easily been the most successful bowler in the state shield to date and has also been a good performer in seasons prior to this one

Well, he's performed really well this season so he deserves a spot in the Origin match. Although I hate to say it, but I don't think he's the right type of bowler for international level.

For the north keeper Peter McGlashan would have to go close. What an outstanding player. (Probably because I good mates with his sister though)

Yeah interesting to see McGlashan doing really well. He was playing for my club in Auckland until he got drafted into the N.D team. While he did ok for my club, he wasn't outstanding.

But he seems to have been brilliant under pressure for N.D, and maybe thats something John Bracewell will look at very closely at.

Out of interest, I checked his stats up over at nzcricket.co.nz & found that he represented the NZ U19's a few years ago...he played 9 One-Dayers and had a strike rate of 104. So those in the know probably weren't surprised by his fast scoring this season.

I also know he is starting up his own Cricket shoe company if anyone is interested. His Sister just made the NZ world cup squad. He is very handy gloveman. and his batting has been going well.

Oh I never knew that Hopkins qualifies for North Island. What about Kerry Walsmley?

Jarrod Englefield has had a pretty solid season for CD, he was such a talent when he first came on the scene, but for the past few seasons he has fallen over a bit. I would have him over Fulton, simply because there is already an overload of top order batsman for the South.

Sure Aldridge has had great figures, but I don't think he will ever crack it on the international stage. Lack of penetration, just like Canning.

James Franklin should come close to making it, and hopefully Vincent is fit by then to come into consideration.
