Parore/Smith
Vettori

I was thinking about this a while ago. I admit, it's perhaps the most strangely balanced team of all time, with Parore or Smith at 10, Vettori 11, and not a single specialist pace bowler (not an all-rounder) in the side. However, I can't see how this is a bad thing. For whatever reason, many of the best pace bowlers in NZ history have been allrounders. Hadlee, Cairns, Reid and Taylor would all go close on bowling alone and their all-round abilities make them even easier to select. The team therefore has incredible batting depth and an excellent 4-pronged pace attack.

Not a bad side but Chats was just a donkey really. If I had to pick a team to play for my life in a test match I'd want attackers so have Bond instead of Chats.

yeah bond hasn't played a heck of a lot of tests though, also taken account how well he bowled with hadlee and he would of been alot more succesful if hadlee wasn't bowling at the other end(which is definately not a bad thing!)

Definitely. Although Bond has not played many tests, when he is fit he if easily the next best bowler behind Hadlee.

Yeah he was good in combo with Paddles. Javed Miandad once said he would like to take Chats back to Pakistan with him to use as a bowling machine in the nets. He was a poor man's Glenn McGrath really who would frustrate batsmen into errors but Hadlee and Bond would just blast sides out in no time.

OPENERS
1. Glen Turner.
Very High scoring opening batsman. Nearly 3000 runs at 45 each. Second player after WG to score thousand runs in May.
2. Bert Sutcliffe. Great left handed batsman. Averaged 45 as opener. Played late due to the weak team and batted lower with a career average of 40 plus. Briliant fielder.
3. Charles Dempster
Great left handed opener of the 30's. Played only 10 runs averaged 65 plus.

MIDDLE ORDER
1. Andrew Jones.

Almost 3000 runs at 44.3, 7 centuries HS 186
2. Martin Crowe
5400 PLUS runs at 45.4 (17 centuries) 299(HS)
3.Martin Donnelly
Acclaimed by many as one of the finest left handed batsmen ever in the game, Donnelly was rated by CB Fry to be as good as Woolley. Toured England as a young 19 year old and averaged 24 in tests. Came the WW@2and after that he toured England in 1949 and averaged a magnificient 77 per innings including a great knock of 206 at Lords. He retired after this to concentrate on business, Averaged 50 plus in his test career and scored 9000 plus first class runs at over 47 each.

ALL ROUNDERS
1. John Reid
Hard hitting batsman(3300 PLUS runs at 33.3 with 6 hundreds) and very useful bowler (85 wickets at 33.3). One of the world's finest slip fieldsmen.
2. Richard Hadlee
431 wickets at 22.3 & 3100 plus runs at 27.2
3. Chris Cairns
218 wkts at 29.4 and 3300plus runs at 33.5
WICKET KEEPER
Warren Lees :
Universally acclaimed as the finest wicket keeper ever to play for NewZealand. Lees averaged a decent 23 plus in tests and scored one test century.

BOWLERS
1. Lance Cairns
Aggressive fast bowler (130 test wickets at 32 each) and big hitting lower order batsman.
2. Daniel Vettori.
188 wkts at an expensive 35 plus and a very useful 20 plus average with the bat including a century.
I know that makes 12. Either one of the openers or one of the all rounders can be left out depending on the circumstances.

This side bats very deep and fields brilliantly.

What they lack in relative lack of legenfry individuals they make up with their amazing all round capabilities. They could actually count 6 of the above as all rounders !!

I would rate Smith, Parore and McCullum above Lees.

bert sutcliffe wasn't a three - but i wouldn't expect you to know that seeing as it looks as though you've chosen your team purely on averages
