NZ All-time XI

you'd probaly have to have a spinner in every all-time XI and it is a well known fact that vettori is easily new zealand's best ever spinner and steven boock averages .42 less than vettori with the ball anyway and if you take batting into the equation(boock was the definition of bunny) then it doesn't take a genius to work out who is the most valuable player, in saying that any all-time NZ XI without vettori wouldn't be too accurate

ok so maybe he didn't and i was being a bit harsh, the only reason i said that is because adam parore definately shouldn't be in there and he averages the most with the bat out of all NZ keepers

 Universally acclaimed by you?
I would rate Smith, Parore and McCullum above Lees.
Its okay for you to rate someone else.

BTW, I had forgotten about Wadsworth, who died young but was the one keeper who I would rate better than Lee.

BTW, I have seen all the keepers named here. Not that it means anything but just mentioning it.

OPENERS
1. Glen Turner.
Very High scoring opening batsman. Nearly 3000 runs at 45 each. Second player after WG to score thousand runs in May.
2. Bert Sutcliffe. Great left handed batsman. Averaged 45 as opener. Played late due to the weak team and batted lower with a career average of 40 plus. Briliant fielder.
3. Charles Dempster
Great left handed opener of the 30's. Played only 10 runs averaged 65 plus.

MIDDLE ORDER
1. Andrew Jones.

Almost 3000 runs at 44.3, 7 centuries HS 186
2. Martin Crowe
5400 PLUS runs at 45.4 (17 centuries) 299(HS)
3.Martin Donnelly
Acclaimed by many as one of the finest left handed batsmen ever in the game, Donnelly was rated by CB Fry to be as good as Woolley. Toured England as a young 19 year old and averaged 24 in tests. Came the WW@2and after that he toured England in 1949 and averaged a magnificient 77 per innings including a great knock of 206 at Lords. He retired after this to concentrate on business, Averaged 50 plus in his test career and scored 9000 plus first class runs at over 47 each.

ALL ROUNDERS
1. John Reid
Hard hitting batsman(3300 PLUS runs at 33.3 with 6 hundreds) and very useful bowler (85 wickets at 33.3). One of the world's finest slip fieldsmen.
2. Richard Hadlee
431 wickets at 22.3 & 3100 plus runs at 27.2
3. Chris Cairns
218 wkts at 29.4 and 3300plus runs at 33.5
WICKET KEEPER
Wadsworth : (EDITED)

BOWLERS
1. Lance Cairns
Aggressive fast bowler (130 test wickets at 32 each) and big hitting lower order batsman.
2. Daniel Vettori.
188 wkts at an expensive 35 plus and a very useful 20 plus average with the bat including a century.
I know that makes 12. Either one of the openers or one of the all rounders can be left out depending on the circumstances.

This side bats very deep and fields brilliantly.

What they lack in relative lack of legenfry individuals they make up with their amazing all round capabilities. They could actually count 6 of the above as all rounders !!

Parore doesn't deserve to be mentioned in an greatest NZ XI team! The guy admitted manipulating the players around him and only doing only enough to stay in the team, rather than achieving his potential - to maintain his income and lifestyle.

This kind of selfish behaviour would have had a very negative effect on the teams he played in.

Parore was a bit of a loose-cannon, but he was a brilliant wicket-keeper all the same. He should have scored alot more runs than his final stats show.

One of my relations Alan Burgess (former Canterbury opener) said Sutcliffe was just phenomenal to watch. He said that his Canterbury side just used to stand & watch in the field as Sutcliffe picked the gaps everytime.

And yes, I am also related to Mark Burgess.

I saw Sutcliffe in India in 1965. He was fantastic. Right at the top amongst the left handed batsmen I have seen and I have seen them from Sobers to Lara.

as far as I'm aware Sutcliffe is VERY highly regarded by most pundits of the game world wide - definately a case of an exceptional player in the wrong team in the wrong era so as to be unable to achieve the success & plaudits his talent deserved..........

Richard Hadlee put Sutcliffe at 3 in his All Time New Zealand XI and he averaged 76 in that position.
oh does that make him a three?
all i said was that he wasn't a number three and having batted in two of his 76 test innings in that position backs that up
