McGrath returns to #1 in PwC ratings

Following his amazing 8/28 against Pakistan, McGrath has moved up to 1st place in the PwC test bowling rankings once again, overtaking Steve Harmison who slips three places. Not bad for a player that many people were writing off not too long ago.

The new top 10 is:
1. Glenn McGrath
2. Muttiah Muralitharan
3. Shoaib Akhtar
4. Steve Harmison
5. Shaun Pollock
6. Jason Gillespie
7. Anil Kumble
8. Shane Warne
9. Makhaya Ntini
10. Chaminda Vaas

Good on ya McGrath, he certainly has been consistent lately, even though he hasn't always bowled his best he picks up the wickets!!

I fail to see how Murali keeps #2.

Not because of the throwing controversy, but how he hasn't played cricket for so long.

Surely, others have played better then a bloke not playing at all.

Your rating drops gradually as you stop playing, but it drops faster if you are playing and perform poorly, like Harmison against South Africa. Murali has sat at two for a while now as Harmison went ahead of him and then dropped behind, and McGrath moves ahead again. If he remains out of test cricket for much longer he will lost 2nd place.

The gap between Murali and Shoaib is now just 9 points, so a good showing by Shoaib in Melbourne against the top batting lineup in the world will see Murali drop to third.

Another interesting aside considering the debate about Kasper in one of the other threads at the moment is that he has jumped an astonishing 12 spots since the last update around 10 days ago, up from 26th to 14th, an increase of around 60 ratings points.

Harmison doesn't deserve to drop behind Murali when he didn't perform that badly, and Murali didn't even play.

Match figures of 1-143 in a winning cause where 20 wickets fell are pretty bad. Regardless, he isn't far behind Murali, but Murali's rating will drop at certain intervals while he isn't playing, eventually ending after 1 year when his rating will drop to 0. One of those intervals did not pass during the last week so Murali stayed on the same score, while Harmison had a bad test and his rating dropped a notable amount. Therefore he fell behind.

Three Aussies in the top 10, and I pressume Kasper's not far behind, aint bad.

Deservedly so. McGrath has been bowling beautifully.

On a personal note, glad to see Kumble in there. :)
