For the 3rd ball on it was good... but it wouldn't have happened but for Astle's butterfingers.
As for the 501*, we've done that-'un before.

No, it means that the only reason he has been credited for them is a dropped catch, something he had no control over and deserved no credit for.

He scored 196*, yes. But he wouldn't have had he been caught when he should have been.
I still don't actually rate the innings quite as highly as some seem to, given that it was on a pitch getting flatter by the delivery and against an attack that couldn't hit the same spot 2 balls in a row.
