Does India deserve to be ranked 8th in Oneday Ranking?

They have to change the way they play one-day cricket. They have to look at how other teams, more successful, are picked, then what they do, and then pick the oves they make that are best for the Indian team. Even the selectors need to be tough on the team and make sure performance is consistent. Far too long they have picked players no just one good performance. If the Indian selectors are as tough as of Australia, or even England or NZ, as many as five players would be out of this team. The fielding has to be top-notch, and no mistakes should be excused- even an average bowling attack can be effective with good fielding support. The same applies for running between wickets.

Maybe, but i think the team combination is totally messed up. I mean what's the point in going with 7 regular batsmen and just 4 regular bowler on a flat track of Eden garden?

india should go into the match with 5 regular bowlers, they shouldn't undermine the role of a specialist bowler and should stop being totally dependent on its batting lineup.
You're very, very right about the nonsensical 7-batsman theory. That weakens the fielding side a lot. That was added to get some balance, but has brought about the opposite.

India against the other 7 teams worth playing since WC 03:

Australia: 2-8
England: 1-2
NZ: 1-1
Pakistan: 3-6
SA: 1-1
SL: 1-2
WI: 0-0

Total record: P29 W9 L20. That's why you're eighth.
Thanks Neil for this. This is a DUH thread.

They are playing crap at the moment, on ability they should be scond best in my opinion but the results are not there so i suppose they deserve to be 8th.

I was always for the seven batsman thing because there would be occasions when Tendulkar would bowl brilliantly (like at the death in the Asia Cup) and Sehwag would always be steady. But at the moment an extra bowler may be an option but the seven batsman has worked so many time for them in the past.

I think Pathan could bat 7, Agarkar 8, then Kumble and Harbhajan and Zaheer at 11. That would be five specialist bowlers, Pathan seems fairly reliable and Agarkar can be a fine batsman on his day. Maybe they should consider it
