my folks were at the mcg on saturday nite for a function, and said that there were big dams still there and still no semblance of grass, and that it was half underwater with all the recent rain in melbourne.

What they're doing is flattening the ground ( it used to have a 'hump' in the middle to help drainage ), new drainage and laying all the cables, etc needed for the electronic timing, not the track itself.

According the the staff there, they were ahead of schedule before the bad weather, which has put them back to about where they should be. All the mud does make it a bit tough to get everything done on time, so it really comes down to how much more rain they get this month.

The 'final' answer will come at the end of the month..by then, the surface will be laid...they will still need to put the grass down, but it's already being grown and just needs to be rolled out ( with enough time to for it to mesh, which is why it needs to be by the end of the month ). The pitch is also being grown offsite and will be dropped in early in December.
