Bowling side - no ball

We were playing match with local team last Saturday and umpire gave no ball (not a professional umpire) because the bowler did not say from which side he is going to bowl. It was his fist over and I argue that umpire has to ask from which side bowler is going to ball and then tell the batsman. Just want to know whats the rule?

Not 100% on the rule but I've definitely been no-balled for this before. Only the once mind you, have made sure it never happens again.
