But if the plan was to bowl SL out for 150, can Doherty really be expected to do much? As I hinted before though, I would have batted and gone for 300 and hope scoreboard pressure plays it's part. Doherty would have stayed in my team for that method.

Haven't watched much of today's game yet, but from what I've seen of the tournament so far, surely you have to play Doherty? I mean, Maxwell bowls pies, and everything is turning. Starc comes in for someone else, or they feel that he's bowling pump at the moment.
Agreed, Doherty is bowling well, and Starc isn't some freak bowler who runs through oppositions.

Reckon it probably gets awkward with Maxwell being someone who could potentially hit a ridiculous score to chase down something off 30 overs. Otherwise you'd drop him and play Starc.

Doherty's got a good record against Sri Lanka, has helped roll them on less responsive wickets in Australia.

Starc averages under 20 with the ball in ODIs and he strikes at over 100 with the bat. Its either Wade or Hughes who would get dropped first for Starc if I was selecting a team from the squad available.

Feels unlikely for NZ with Aust chasing considering if they do need to make something like 250 in 29 overs, you get the feeling it will be all or nothing and will be unlikely for them to win in say 45 overs. I just can't see Aust getting over the line in a close game with their mindset of trying to knock the runs off quickly.

When the ball isn't swinging conventionally much, I don't think Starc is all that threatening, I personally think they got the team right. It was always going to be tough when Sri Lanka have 7 specialist batsmen.

starceh can bat tbf
Yeah, thinking about it more I probably would have included him for the expense of Faulkner. On the proviso that they feel that he's bowling well - I'm not sure they are if he's slipped behind Faulkner in the pecking order already. Think you still need spin in this game.

Jim Maxwell doesn't subscribe to ajdude's views:

Aust need wickets now or the qualifying scenario really will enter 'mathematically possible' territory. A slip would be nice. #cricket

@danbrettig ridiculous that starc isn't playing

Sri Lanka batting like England. I hope they don't score 150 runs in these last 15 overs
