Academic now but bowling all-rounders are better, because even if other players overtake their batting they'll still be contributing to the side as a number 7-8 because their gun bowling will ensure they're in the team anyway. Whereas if their bowling is overtaken then they'll only be playing as a batsman, which means their bowling is entirely wasted (although they'd still be ok as a 6-7 bowler in FC or when better orders are introduced).

Why does he have to be either a batting or bowling allrounder? He's a gun, and the current nets that he's got him on at the moment are fine. There's not much point in giving him a second fitness net, IMO, and it'd be better off going towards a primary. If he had four nets available, I'd keep what he has right now. If it got stepped up to five nets, then Tharmi should be deciding whether he needs a batting or bowling allrounder, and give it to the corresponding skill. As for Jeithoon, the third bowling net would be better off on fielding, in my opinion, but that's probably just because I'm not a big fan of third primary nets.
Its better to specialise in one area for sometime and later do the rest. His secondaries are appalling and if you get them up then he would be pretty awesome.

if want to spend a lot of nets and make into an all-rounders u need 1 batting 1 bowling 1 fielding, 1 keeping, 1 fitness

batting allrounger
1 fitness, 2 batting, 1 fielding, then later 2 bowling 1 fielding, 1 fitness.

bowling i feeling should be trained when he is 19. but it depends on what u want him to do int the team whether u need batting or bowling.

Doesn't need keeping at all, just needs patience. With 1 bat, bowl and field their secondaries will catch up perfectly well over time.

Makes absolute no sense in giving someone 2 batting and no bowl and then later giving them 2 bowl and no bat - you just lose out on 15-20% of batting and bowling over time and half of your secondary pops, compared to just having 1 bat, 1 bowl over the same period.

Yeah, what the fishy one said.

When training a player for skills (as opposed to a bit of short-term profit), you've got to think "Where's this guy going to be in two seasons' time?" rather than "How can I get this guy somewhere, fast?"

On the subject of stamina, I think I might have made a fairly large mistake - I've neglected to give my players much fitness training, so have a squad with mostly mediocre and competent stamina. I suspect that it's going to come back to haunt me once the FC games start, and I'll have to drop a lot of my batting and bowling nets for a season or so.

It's probably my Hattrick mindset telling me that I could always do stamina training later, and quickly - D'OH!

Jumpers for Wickets has a good article on stamina training.

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
I think stamina will just depend on the player and what they do. I think you do need a bit higher for fast bowlers - mine's at respectable and I'll probably train him up to proficient at the end of the season. Those who flog their all-rounders, when they bat in the top 4 and then bowl most of the overs are always going to struggle with PFLs even if they have superb stamina. I reckon med-comp stamina for average batsmen and lesser bowlers will be enough. Feeble enough for bit part players, but we'll get value for every level of stamina up to superb for the gun bowlers, all-rounders etc.

The other thing with stamina is that it hurts the PFLs more than usual when it's trained, so it's best to avoid training it during a season unless they're going to be rested for a few games.

Hi guys,

Is there any chance someone could offer some tips to a Battrick newbie? I guess more than anything I'm wondering whether it's best to start off hunting for transfers, or to spend the money on stadium or academy stuff. I've got what look to me like three at least mildly promising trainees, and at this stage it seems like I could sink a lot of money in to ITS and still get someone rubbish. What do you reckon?

Oh yeah; about player fitness levels. I'm training at 90 intensity (is this daft?), and all my players are listed as energetic or sublime. But the overall fitness on the nets page is listed as only "fair". What's up with that?

Standard horrible starting squad so you need to keep skimming the transfer market as much as possible for cheap 17yo trainees, there are plenty of solid meds or competents going for well under 50,000. Players like this:

Stamina: mediocre Wicket Keeping: worthless
Batting: mediocre Concentration: mediocre
Bowling: worthless Consistency: abysmal
Fielding: woeful

are what I mean by solid. They only need one batting net over a period of time and they'll become a decent player, they're not deficient in stamina or concentration. For instance if they had worthless stamina it would take 19-24 nets to get it to mediocre, with that number of nets a mediocre 17yo bat could be trained to respectable bat - that's how much of a penalty the crap stamina is. Avoid players like this:

Stamina: worthless Wicket Keeping: worthless
Batting: respectable Concentration: worthless
Bowling: worthless Consistency: worthless
Fielding: worthless

The worthless concentration will mean they massively underperform as a bat, 17yos take about 16 weeks to pop in concentration, consistency with the relevant batting or bowling net - so it'll be ages before the worthless concentration catches up to say something where they play to their batting level like mediocre. The effect of stamina in Battrick is dramatic, worthless stamina bats will barely get past 20, if they do it'll be really slow going, abysmal the 'wall' is more like 40, woeful is around 60-70, feeble around 100. Bowling depends on what they actually bowl, fast bowlers need more stamina than spinners - even a good medium/FM/F bowler with abysmal stamina will average like 50+ and go at 6 an over. I'd recommend feeble as a minimum generally.

You will find 17yos on the market for next to nothing that are better than your current trainees, you don't really want to be training 20+ yos from such a low starting point as competent - if you just give that solid mediocre guy one batting net for 3 full seasons he'll be at least this when he's 20.

Stamina: mediocre Wicket Keeping: worthless
Batting: strong Concentration: proficient
Bowling: worthless Consistency: abysmal
Fielding: woeful

So in summary:

Buy cheap, solid 17yos without the major deficiencies I mentioned, as you get a feel for the transfer market you can spend more money without the risk of wasting it

Don't bother training any of your current squad listed above when you've got in a few 17yos

You can easily handle at least 4 17yo trainees with decent amounts of training on them if you want to. When you give someone 2 batting nets the 2nd batting net is 30-35% wasted and you don't get any secondary (concentration) pops from the 2nd batting net, the same applies for other nets, so weigh up whether you want more immediate results while the batting pops a little faster at a younger age. I personally would train guys with 2 batting/bowling nets as a 17yo, then depending on how good they are drop down to 1 batting/bowling net thereafter and keep going til they're into their 20s.

If you can, get a wicket-keeper batsman trainee. Wicket-keeping pops really fast (8 weeks on one net, 3-4 weeks faster than batting/bowling) plus you get more secondaries pops when you train wicket keeping or fielding so you get a lot out of it. Get a good balance of trainees overall if possible, ie not all batsmen or all bowlers.

Good idea to 'round out' your stadium at the end of the season (ie when there are no games being held at your stadium, stadium seating terraces have a certain ratio which I'll find shortly), I wouldn't bother putting money into the youth pull system yet

You might already know this, but anyway:

Standing room:Uncovered seats:Covered seats:Member seats are in ratio
45:40:11:4

that means if you fill your standard starting stadium with 5000 standing room you would also fill 4444 uncovered seats, 1222 covered seats and 444 member seats *if* you had them - there's no fancy programming involved in the attendances, it's just rigid ratios like that. So to round out your stadium you'd need 4444 uncovered seats, 1222 covered seats, 444 member seats - only do this tho if you're filling your 5000 standing room because maintenance costs are large and if you don't fill nearly all your stadium it'll cost you more to run the stadium than you'll get in attendances.

Awesome - thanks very much, this is great stuff. I'd been looking for transfers with not-too-rubbish secondaries too, and had been discouraged by the high prices. Hadn't realised how much you can train those problems out of 17-year-olds, so that's really helpful to know.

Re: the stadium - I got the following attendance figures for my (first and only) home game, but onlly have the initial ground layout (in brackets)

Attendance: 5021
Standing: 2466 (5000)
Sitting: 1850 (1400)
Covered Seats: 517 (0)
Members area: 188 (100)

Does that mean I'm missing out on the revenue for all the people in each category that couldn't be seated? Yipes...

Scaly piscine

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Yea you're missing out on a little bit of revenue, if there are no covered seats those poeple don't move to standing or anything, they just don't turn up - it's extremely simplistic (there's also a display bug which occurs every so often that tells you what attendance you would have got with an infinitely big stadium, that's why you've gotten 517 for covered seats instead of 0 and so forth - it's only a display bug tho, so stuff in the financial bit will be right and so on).

Just stating some other vitally important basics just on the off chance that you overlooked one of them: You should have 3-6 sports psychologists (they work on concentration and consistency, without the psychologists neither of those two skills would ever increase). You should have at 2 (maybe 3) PR officers, add another in a season or two. You probably won't need financial advisors for a while, all they do is alter the interest you get - don't need them while you're probably on ~200,000 and looking to buy the odd player (there are resources on the Battrick site itself, under community > links that tell you how to maximise profit by having the right number of financial advisors for certain levels of cash).

Well, cheers for the advice - obviously inspired, my players managed a much more respectable four-wicket loss yesterday, having set a not-embarrassing total of 247. Progress! Now I'm off to look at transfers.

This is great fun. :)

Just the general improvement you'd expect really, bowling comfortably better than your batting.

I'd move Coates to number 3, drop Paris to 5 while he's on a crap PFL, as well as having the bowlers in the correct batting order (Ross Jones, feeble at 7, abysmals at 8 and 9 etc.) I know you've got some easy games coming up in 3-4 weeks, I'd give Street and Paris a rest in those if possible (might be better playing a competent or mediocre if you have one than Street anyway while his PFL is so bad). You'd be better off having a boring solid competent than Weerakoon who's low respectable.

I'm bad with maths.

I need to round off my stadium, so if I have 10000 standing capacity, what numbers should the rest of them have?

And I have around 1900 members, around what capacity should I be looking to expand?

What to expand to really depends on what level you're in and whether you're likely win most of your games or not.

I'm beginning to think about next season now, as I'm out of the cup and will get promoted to India III with my reserve side. I've got 1,848,000 in the bank at the moment and have stable finances. I know I need to make a few good signings to be competitive next year, any chance of some help?

I've also got to factor in the FC league - how many players should I get rid of to give me sufficient backup?

You seem to have plenty of competents so you can afford to spend the money on good players rather than back-ups.

You need someone to lead your bowling attack - superbs cost way too much at the moment so I think you're best off waiting for a reasonably-priced strong bowler. If you're patient enough you should be able to get one with reasonable secondaries for 600k or something. It would be ideal to get someone reasonably young (say 20-22) who you can train to superb (like Trev did with Bridges m). If you want someone younger you can expect to pay 1m or more. Older players (say 28+) tend to go cheap sometimes for no real reason, so if you see any keep an eye on them.

I think you could use a better WK/batsman as well, you won't get much use out of Ahmed. I find WK/batsmen make good trainees as their secondaries train faster with a primary net (wicketkeeping), and they generally aren't too expensive to buy. Apart from that, just keep an eye out for respectables with feeble/mediocre type secondaries - they often go pretty cheap and could replace some of your starters.

Cheers Adam, I was thinking about a keeper/batsman so I might concentrate on that now. What is a decent level of keeping to start training from - mediocre?

I think you should spend a bit of money on someone a bit better.

E.g. someone like this guy who is about to sell in a few minutes:

Code:
1. Deepak Alshaun £216,489 (Montys 11)
Plays for: Devils in Blue Stamina: feeble W/Keeping: respectable
Age: 17 years old Batting: competent Concentration:mediocre
BT Rating: 6,072 Bowling: worthless Consistency:	worthless
Deadline: 22/10/2006 16:17 Fielding: worthless
You can get a guaranteed mediocre bat/WK from your youth academy anyway so it's not really worth buying a mediocre.
