5th Test at The Oval, London

He's gonna be an Ian Harvey type. Moments of brilliance, could see hat tricks with the ball or taking 25 runs off an over with the bat

But can't see him getting test 150s or 7fers

He's bits and pieces but very good at it

Yeah but ……

He seems to have the handy knack of performing better in test matches than domestic games. His spell today was way better than anything he's sent down for Surrey this year. Ditto his key spell in the first innings at Edgbaston last year. And his vital innings against India were also far better than anything he's done with the bat for Surrey. He also seems to have the handy knack of making vital contributions at key times in test matches. Even against Ireland he made the vital break-throughs late on Day 1 when they looked like securing a match winning lead. It helps that he's gained a bit of pace, if the commentator who said one of his lbws clocked 88mph was right. All of the criticisms about him not being a genuine 3rd seamer and not being a genuine top 6 batsman and struggling when the ball doesn't swing are absolutely true, but he keeps doing good things in test matches at time when they are needed.

Broad honestly was giving throw downs earlier.
Without checking, his stats for the series are probably very respectable. But rather less so when he wasn't been bowling to Warner. He's been good at times, but he's also gone missing at times when we really expected him to step up; today one example, 2nd innings at Lord's another.

It was his hatrick ball that clocked in at 88, he was between 80 and 82 all day for the most part iirc.

Something really needs to be done about international umpiring. I have a hard time believing that this is the best they can get, maybe they need to increase the salaries (of the good ones at least) to encourage better candidates who aren't as hopeless in general.

Back to the Warner DRS, regardless if it was out or not out, it was overturned literally within seconds without even looking at why there was a spike on snicko or when it happened. If you're going to overturn a not out decision you have to be pretty certain.

Rory Burns said it all with his face and demeanour after being given "out". These guys don't seem fit to umpire. I don't like saying it. But it's become true. The umpires have had a stinker. That was a ridiculous decision by Dharmesena last ball of the day.

And Cricket Australia needs to do something for Smith, give him a $5 million bonus or something because they screwed him the **** over with that ban, hugely, and now he's the only thing keeping them from being a laughing stock of a cricket team. Ungrateful ****s.

Maybe it's just recency and familiarity bias, but the Australian and English umpires aren't anywhere near as **** as the clowns have been umpiring us in this series. How can Australia and England produce good umpires but the other nations not?

Why oh why did Paine bowl...here's my reasoning...

Someone posted earlier in the week that Smith was not as good as Kholi since he can't bat in 4th innings of Tests as he had never scored a hundred there to win a Test. This pushed Burgey over the edge as he was banned for name calling above said poster...

By bowling, Paine has now set the stage for Smith to honour the CW fallen and score a 4th innings hundred to win the Test and the series :)

He may be a million miles off him in terms of opening batsman quality but Harris sure emulates Michael Slater as a fielder.

Wouldn't bet against it tbh

Conversely however also sets the stage for Smith to finally fail/get unlucky and edge one early and then support the claims that he isn't good at 4th innings chases . . .

smith dismissed 24 short to beat SMG in his debut series in 1971 but smith has 2nd chance on difficult wicket on day 4

Smith 4 test 769 vs ind
smith 4 test 751* vs Eng
Sunny 4 test 774 vs WI
V.Richard 4 test 829 vs Eng

Well barring a riot in England's 2nd innings the game is lost for Australia. You know if we batted first and only scored 225 then conceded 294 we'd still be in the game. But yeah ... bat first ... under mottled blue skies ... that cleared up real quick ... when your bowlers needed a rest from bowling last in the previous test ... also pick Siddle ... when you picked Marsh to do his job ... If only we kept Bancroft ...

starting to think this series has been a bit weird
This series is like the 2005 Ashes if it was played between crappier teams.
