Resting Cummins would be the height of stupidity. He's got a long break before the next series after this one.

Would anyone think Wade could do any worse than Bancroft/Warner/ Harris as an opener?

We haven't yet won the series, resting our best bowler would be absolutely stupid. If we hadn't stuffed up at Headingley and had actually closed the thing out then I'd consider it.

Yeah you're probably right. I just worry about the risk of him breaking down rather than general fatigue.

If there's someone who's fatigued to the point of affecting their own performances it's Lyon (though admittedly the finger was a problem there), but he can't be rested as there's no-one else to cover for him in the squad.

As GIMH pointed out earlier, the Aussies are in the same place ENG where in 10/11. Would have been devastating for us to have lost the Sydney test even though we would have still taken the ashes home. The Aussies will be up for the Oval just as much as this last test.

Conversly if Eng can win it yeah the Aussies have got the urn, but 80% of the bragging rights are gone and it will surely feel a bit hollow. I like this scenario a lot more.

Only in the sense of "it's hard to do worse". I cannot see that working at all, though.

In Australia, and most places, I think Wade could do a fine job as opener. Not sure about in England though.

Yeah but thatís no good if he breaks down. Iím not saying to rest him because he needs a snooze, Iím talking in terms of managing potential stress fracture type injuries. They test for those pretty stringently these days anyway I suppose, so theyíll know if heís at risk. If he is I wouldnít play him.

I wouldn't think it's stupid to rest him, assuming they have good reason to do so, considering we have Patto in the wings who's nearly as good anyway. If we were relying on Siddle or Neser to come in and replace Cummins I'd be more strongly against resting him.

Cummins has sent down 48 overs in the last 4 days, and was starting to look pretty tired.

It will obviously depend on how he feels over the next few days, but given that the Ashes have been retained, it may be worth giving him the chance to put his feet up and enjoy the celebrations.

Sam Curran should be playing. Can do no worse than these specialist batsmen.

I've been really surprised at how ordinary Bairstow and Buttler have been. Every time we get them 4 or 5 down and these 2 are there I get worried because I expect them to bat like they do in ODIs but they keep getting out.
