I get the point wrt workloads but I still don't see any real alternative other than Stokes. Bloke just seems to be so obviously the heart and soul of the team.

Pretty much the same argument that was used when Freddie got the captaincy. We all know how that ended up

And when Ian Botham got the captaincy
I don’t think Botham was captaincy material as his attitude to practice was loose and his idea of team spirit was to dangle someone out of a window as a joke. But he was unfortunate to start his captaincy with back to back series against the Windies and then be given it one Test at a time for The Ashes.

Not sure why anyone would decapitate my post and then make a point that has nothing to do with it or anything else I’ve ever written.

To make a different, largely unrelated point, using your first sentence as a segue. Apologies if it offended you in some way.

I agree with all your objections but still struggle to land on Burns as the answer

But you never know I guess
The guy's been very impressive this series, but still only averages 28. The last thing you want is to give him the captaincy and risk tanking the career of a promising opener.

I think by a process of elimination its got to be Stokes.

In the absence of an outstanding specialist captain , surely must pick the best 11 players...… but obviously no one has a clue who they are !

After this summer I don’t see too many of the World Cup players who are established in the Test side wanting to go to New Zealand in November.

Anderson should come back to the team as captain. Will be quite deserving too as he has been a great servant for English cricket.
