I would not have pulled to have been the first guy to face Starc in the nets after he learned he was dropped for the first test. I'm pretty sure the ball wouldn't have been pitched in my half.

If it's flat it's not very good sandpaper. More like sticky tape.

Patto rested. Probably the right move to save him for Headingley

Geez, pretty bad having to rest a bowler with 9 days between games. Was sure 2nd and 4th tests were certainties for Pattinson given the tour games in between.

Why would you risk him if he's that bad. Marsh playing as back up would be the only way.

Guessing we're back to Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood for Lords.

Best guess is that they want him to play at Headingley which would suit him more than the Lords. There are only 3 day break between the 2nd and 3rd tests.

    Gah

Assume the CA medical staff know a fair bit more than I do, but still disappointing. Hope he is ready to really do some damage at Headingley

On the plus side, never thought I'd see the day when Aus selectors actually had to make decisions like this because we had so many fit bowlers

This is the first genuine "rotation" selection we've seen for a while from Australia. Such selections seemed to have peaked around 2012-2013 after which there was a bit of a backlash under Lehmann.

Pretty hard justifying Starc over Siddle, tbf. Siddle being an «overs-eater» and keeps things relatively tight. Starc is the exact opposite.

Did the Australian team ever genuinely apply a RoPo in Tests, though? (Aside against South Africa in Perth in 2013, and that was more or less out of necessity)

Yeah but it was always Starc for Pattinson as the strike bowler. Siddle is competing with Hazlewood for keeping it tight.
