    Will it though?

IIRC there was an interview with Mark Howard where he said that he knew he was past it but stayed on because the replacements werenít up to scratch.

Ponting really was, and still is, a great man. Amazing how much he grew throughout his career from the little **** he was in his early 20s

I wish he was the Australian coach. Mind you, it's not surprising to see the side put up a much better fight with Steve Waugh involved in the set up. I still can't imagine a scenario where Langer tells him what to do, regardless of their respective roles.

I'd expect Smith to pass Bradman before the end of his career. He is that good.

True. But you can have an excellent series and get no centuries or one century. You wouldn't bet against Smith getting 3 tons in any one series, but you would bet against him getting 3 tons in all the series'.

Who knows, Archer might completely dominate him?

Point is, it's very hard to predict the future and while I do see him getting into clear second place, I remember thinking that Ponting was going to smash all the run scoring records after the 06/07 Ashes but the reality was that that point was the point at which he started averaging 40 for the rest of his career.

The main difference between Smith in the last 4 years and Bradman is basically that Bradman converted his centuries to double centuries frequently. There's little else to split them during this insane run.

The wanker runs rule, so to speak. But yeah, Smith does seem more vulnerable to mental fatigue than Bradman did, and does seem more satisfied with a match-winning score than trying to get as much runs as possible.

In the past two days on here Smith has been on the cusp of 10,000 runs at an average of 60 despite being only currently in the low 6000ís, beating the record of 974 runs for a series in this series, and scoring another 10 Ashes centuries. Heíll probably reach 10,000 runs at some point in the next few years but the rest of it isnít happening.

Sangakarra has 13k runs at an average of 57. Smith needs to keep it over 60.

In regards to "best average after X innings" Steve Smith with 62.98 has now broken Gary Sobers record for best ever average after 119 innings (65 tests).

Note: please stop comparing Smiths so called peak with Ponting, Tendulker, etc peaks as its not a peak, it's his entire career

lot of minnow bashing for Sanga

15 Tests against Banglas who were genuine minnows (averages 95!)
    only 5 v Zim (average 89)

but I doubt Smith will ever play Zim

The 974 is a decent shout from here, given his start
