England Fans - how is this series shaping up compared to 06/07 and 13/14?

So far, I'd say worse than 06/07 - because in that series we were up against perhaps the greatest test side ever assembled on a revenge or die mission - but on par with 13/14.

Familiar collapses, stupid off-field distractions. Australia looking like they're playing a different sport at times.

It's difficult to split hairs though.

This is surely nowhere near as bad as 13/14. That was, on paper, a good team which utterly embarrassed itself. This is an obviously mediocre side which is playing as such.

There was much made of the 'review' after the 06/07 whitewash, but as you say we were up against one of the historically great sides on a revenge mission. Steve Smith aside, this is a pretty average Australia outfit, and I think the time has come for changes in the English game to allow us to compete away from English shores. Test cricket has a real problem with home advantage. No Australian victory in England in almost 17 years, one English victory in Australia in 31 years. We've basically learnt no lessons since 13/14. Preparing a side to win Down Under should be the ECB's focus now. Do that, and other series victories will look after themselves.

IMO Warner and Lyon are just as good as any opener or spinner england have produced in the last 50 years.

Exactly, England were favourites going into 2013/14. Who realistically expected much of England this series?

The main disappointment is that the lesser heralded guys have generally stood up but the stars have been mostly been very disappointing.

13/14 is the worst by miles. An absolute capitulation from a team that should have done much better.

Australia were an ATG side, and were really, really motivated going into 06-07 (conducting an inquest, holding preparatory camps etc.). Considering England had lost Trescothick and Vaughan, and Flintoff was a shadow of himself going into that series, they never really stood a prayer in hindsight.

In 13-14, they just fell away after Johnson's over to Trott before tea in Brisbane. That series effectively ended the careers of about half that team (Trott, Pietersen, Prior and Swann). None of the matches were even close.

This current team could have won in Adelaide and the series would be well and truly alive if one or two more guys had stood up in that match. Even Brisbane could have been completely different if they had set a target of 250+, which they really should have on that pitch. So in summary, they've had more chances to compete in this series since they are facing a team whose batting almost completely relies on Smith, but have failed to take advantage.

They've felt slightly more competitive here than in 2013-14, but ultimately it just feels like 2013-14 on repeat. 2006-7 was different for the reasons specified above.

Everyone cricket fan I know has been concerned for months that we might well be on for a hammering in this series, and once Stokes was taken out of the equation it became almost inevitable

See 2nd innings Brisbane to me didn't have the feeling of "oh they threw that away", it felt more like "well, that's running to script now".

Cook, Moeen Ali and Bairstow's dismissals were pretty poor, especially Bairstow.

By the time Bairstow was out the innings was more or less done, as everyone knew the tail would be blown away. Moeen just got stumped off a good nut, it happens.

Despite being a Durham supporter, I've never actually seen ''Borthwick's Ashes''. I had turned off following Perth 2013.
