Bell didn't do that much in 10/11 though. Not-that-useful 50s right until some world-class downhill skiing in the last Test when Aus were completely shot (the bowling in that Test...)

But I guess it's a shootout between one critical series performance each between them and a bunch of poor-to-mediocre ones otherwise. Root has played on more difficult pitches here, but Bell '13 faced better bowling (largely because of Harris). I'd probably still lean towards Root, but that's purely because I simply think he's a better batsman straight-up rather than his actual performances being markedly better.

I think the series scoreline probably would've been the exact same had he not played (maybe Aus would've won Brisbane) but I don't think you can really hold that against him. He was class for most of the series, even in the rare moments Australia were on top and couldn't have done more at Adelaide and Sydney.

Hang on, we put 517-1 on at Brisbane. Don't think it was Bell who stopped us from losing

What I was meaning was that Bell was a lone hand in 13, but in 09 Strauss was more capably backed up by Trott

No he wasn't. Trott scored most of his runs after the series was effectively won. He did 0 backing up of Strauss at Lord's and Edgbaston, because he wasn't playing.

You might as well say that Bell in 2013 was backed up by KP.

Trott's century was important, because it put the match out of reach for the Aussies but I completely agree with what you say

Wonder if schearzie is mixing it up with the 10-11 series

    Strauss (c)
    Cook
    Bell
    Pietersen
    Root
    Flintoff
    Prior (w/k)
    Swann
    Broad
    Jones
    Anderson

Fourth bowler spot was probably the hardest to pick. Jones was a better bowler than Harmison though and there were no other real standouts. Hoggard was probably third in line.

Bell, Cook, Root all were standouts in an Ashes series and deserved to be picked. Pietersen was the best bat from the era and Strauss the best captain. Flintoff picks himself. Prior was the best keeper and Broad and Anderson have been consistently good in the English series' wins.

Quite possible. As I said I earlier, I'm not a fan of Bell, so I'm more than happy to leave him out of any side he's not up to.
I've reread the thread I think I got confused. Carry on.

The only guy who was there for all 5 wins should probably be first name on the team sheet.

I know it's kinda hundreds or bust for batting performances sometimes but Bell was important in the deciding 2009 test and not getting beat at Brisbane 2010 (the first innings). Even had a good Test at Old Trafford 2005. Plus being part of a winning side counts. Catches, partnerships etc.

Also Steven Finn has been in more Ashes wins than Flintoff

Trivia: Who is the only player to have played in all 5 Tests of all 5 series?

Also here are some figures to assist selection if you want a look

Would have to be M Clarke?? Only other player to have played all 5 series is Bell and he missed some tests in '09.
