So Ricky Ponting thinks 8 of this Aussie squad will never play test cricket again

wow Australia is touring NZ in Feb? so that's 6 Aus-NZ test matches back to back?
Think it is 3 in Australia, but 2 in NZ, was meant to be three, but cut one for ODIS.

Also both sides will be playing sides in between around Christmas time. Australia will be battering the West Indies in tests and also have a limited over series with India.

Not as sure about NZ, but pretty sure they have Sri Lanka or Pakistan around then. Open to correction though.

^Aside from Khawaja that looks a pretty solid line up already. Surely Starc is a shoe in still?

so did the team they were putting out in england though... Judging the Australian batting line-up on paper is the issue.

So your best bowler on this tour shouldn't be playing tests but a bloke who looks miles off the required standard (Hazlewood) should?

Hazelwood has taken 16 wickets in 4 tests...

He hasn't been as good as some of us expected tbf. Hasn't been tight and has been letting the pressure off with 4 balls. I think the main reason has been just not bowling normally. His best bet is to settle into accurate top of off stump spells but the small totals and conditions have him looking for wicket balls. Has been poor with his line to the lefties also. Seems to have been on Cooks pads a bit.

You have to learn to bowl in English conditions and that's true for him. Decent return given his bowling imo.

Yeah, and his worst performances have been on the two pitches we've needed his skills the most (Edgbaston and TB); hitting the seam and extracting movement, something you can't rely on Johnson and Starc to do.

If he just ran in all day and bowled the channel getting nibble on a length that would be perfect. It's what McGrath was brilliant at. It shouldn't be surprising that it's harder than it looks. Having the potential to be like McGrath and doing it consistently under pressure is a huge gap. I think he's good enough to close that gap.
