Broad would be my choice captain now if there wasn't an incumbent. I wouldn’t touch it unless cook wants to / he has selection problems however.

Anyway, there's more chance of Maggie Thatcher opening the bowling for England at Perth than there is of Cook losing the captaincy.

Agreed. I think he was possibly trying to show how it was done and send a message to MJ/Clarke. It's a good shot for him so hitting a few 4s and putting the Aussies on the back foot would have helped his team. This is where execution matters because he failed and came out of it looking badly.

Cook reminds me of a Tendulkar/Dravid in terms of player and captain. Great batsman, one of the best in the world and the most reliable in the team, but that doesn't make him a good captain. Sometimes the best player in the team should just be a left to do his job with the bat. Cook doesn't strike me as a guy who likes that extra responsibility of rallying his team and inspiring them. He seems a metronomical type of guy, and perhaps worrying about the captaincy has affected his batting rhythm. I feel sorry for the poor guy, a quality player and one of the best England has ever produced, having to cop this kind of crap from his home fans.
Can't help but think a guy like Broad or Prior (if he warrants a place in the team) would be able to handle the responsibility of captaincy better and thrive on it, as well as being able to get more fire out of their team.

My guess is Cook's weaknesses will remain but the media will consider all problems solved after he's done bullying the Indian attack next summer. 5 tests will give him plenty of time to up the average

Basically what I said somewhere. A home summer against Sri Lanka and India should be prime meat for Cook as they struggle to exploit his weakness full outside off stump like the Aussies have. Be put down as a blip like UAE by the press, fans will remember it for a long time though.

Does anyone else get weirded out by how often Cook mentions 'the dressing room' ?

All the stats suggest Cook struggles to bat in England relative to overseas. Cook only turned up for one match in 2011 vs India, he averaged 10.8 for the series if you remove his 294.
I'm really nervous that 2014 could be catastrophic for Cook if he doesn't beat Sri Lanka and India and get a bagful of runs in the process. With Flower out of the picture there will be no loyalty left if he fails.
