Technique is about how you deal with the fact that a fast small ball is being thrown at you and needs to be hit. It is measured by effectiveness - not aesthetics

His technique against quick bowling isn't the worst either.

Yeah he looks weird but the way he played some quality bowlers in really helpful swing bowling conditions on Day 1 at TB and Day 2 at The Oval was pretty impressive. Most (all?) of the ways he got out to the quicks were down to poor shot selection, not flawed technique.

The knock on Smith has always been that against the moving ball he's too loose. He's come a long way in that respect but there's still plenty of work to do.

Hasn't had a knock on his spin game though. Not sure where the poor technique calls come from there.
