Australia's test side for the Ashes in Australia

Amidst all this talk of Australia having apparently stumbled across a top five that are "locked in" for the second leg, can someone explain what exactly Warner has done to guarantee himself an opening berth? Continues to smack of lack of alternatives to me...

The short answer is David Warner has done more than any of his rivals for his position. That's why, provided Warner is fit and 'available', the selectors will chose he and Rogers to open the innings at The Gabba.

He is in for Brisbane based on his 50 and how long a run he gets if he doesn't make runs is anyone's guess. Might depend if someone in the SS has a hot start and he's struggling. We really need the bats outside the team to start upping there game to put pressure on the incumbents and give form replacements.

Mate, 2 things
1. Maxwell is useless
2. Aaron Finch is Australia's premiere long form spin-bowling all-rounder
Maxwell pretty handy on Australian wickets. Also I dont know if you know this but Finch's shield average is 15.............Thats Poor.

was having a laugh about Finch, he barely deserves to be selected for his state.

Even if Maxwell is handy on Aussie wickets, he has given me no indication that he is a long form cricketer and there would never be need for a spin bowling all-rounder in Australia with Smitteh and Lyon in the side.

Yeah look not a huge fan of Maxwell but was trying to come up with a 17 man squad and we needed another Bat. Me personally I would like Shaun Marsh in the squad.

I see Shaun Marsh as a one day specialist just as I see Finch as a one day specialist, and their records support that theory. Marsh maybe, just maybe, could develop into a test player. Finch for mine will always be a short form of the game player.

Only if Marsh shows he has re-discovered his long form game through good SS form will I accept that he should come back into contention, he does have the potential to be a long form player though, made a test century (on a road mind you).

Because, since the 2009 Ashes, the only Australians to have scored more centuries than him are Clarke and the retired.

Doolan scored 80 and 100 in warm ups against Victoria, seems he is in form.
Good on him. Early season form will be very valuable come selection time and Boof likes nothing more in cricket than blokes scoring 100s and more 100s.

To be honest, after getting mauled by Bhajji and Ashwin I'd be very reluctant to throw him to Swann.

Personally I think Hughes needs a full season's grace on home pitches at a designated position (ideally 6). He hasn't had one sine 2009-10 and we've invested too much in him to brush him off now.
