Yeah, but what if said batsman fails? Surely you can't not take them on tour after one match if you thought they were among the best 6 batsman in the country before that?
He is likely to tour regardless of how he performs, but giving a batsman some confidence against Australia a few months before playing Australia in an away tour can only be a positive for a young guy.

This is really similar to Trent Bridge btw. England do ok in the first session, but lose wickets at a quicker rate as the day goes on and end up with a sub par score.

You won't have time to grab four under ideal swing bowling conditions though
