Agar gets nice flight. Kind of how Lyon use to bowl before in the test team, but never really replicated it.

When blokes said Conpton was a slow scorer and got bogged down, was Root advocated as a replacement in part because it was thought he'd rotate the strike or score more quickly? Or was it more a question of comparative form between the two of them?
tbh I think the scoring rate thing was overplayed.

It was more just that Root has a better technique for dealing with pacey swing bowling. Compton's centuries were all scored on the flattest of wickets. As soon as there was any swing or pace Southee or Boult took him out easily.

Root always looked solid though.

Root's spot was never in question, it was between Compton and Bairstow. Root's opening by default because he's done it before in FC.

Boof hiding a vodka in that water bottle. Note the furtive glance at the camera just then

Decent start, all the runs scored by England players and all the wickets taken by Englishmen

Root was always going to move up, it was just a case of when. The selectors have obviously decided Bairstow is a better player than Compton and made the change now. Would not be surprised to see Cook/Root and Pattinson opening up ashes battles for many years to come. Could be great viewing as a cricket fan.

I will be very surprised if Root is a successful test opening batsman unless he changes his technique as it is hard to believe that he will be consistent when he doesn't move his feet, cover off stump and plays with an angled bat
