I don't really like changing a winning team, but in this case, Finn had a really poor game, and Onions bowled pretty well in the tour game. I'd be tempted to replace Bairstow with Compton too, and move Root down to 6, but maybe give Bairstow one more go. Team changes aside though, a fantastic win. Bell played a magnificent knock, and one that will hopefully have put a temporary stop on the Bell haters, and do we need to say any more about Jimmy? If he bowls like this the whole series, surely a knighthood has to come his way? **** Andy Murray. Arise Sir Jimmeh.
Anderson is my favourite bowler to watch. His control of swing really is unparalleled.
The speed at which a fielding team gets through the innings is overrated.

    yeah I'd agree.

Finn's been innocuous and expensive for so long, I would've thought swapping him out would have been a bigger priority than Compton.

Two jaffas and suddenly Australia's top two scoring specialist bats from the first innings are back in the sheds for 17 between them on the stroke of stumps; would've lost without that.
Pretty much sums up his career against Oz and that's why he averages 40+ against us

According to his mother, the Burgeinho summing up when Haddin was given out was

    "Ah ****.

    ****in' Poms".

    Hard to argue with that.

So how does that explain his figures against Australia?

That's also probably why he bowled so well

Should check out this table. Really confirms what someone said before about us losing a lot of tight matches. Crazy really.

Records | Test matches | Team records | Smallest margin of victory (by runs) | ESPN Cricinfo

If you only include matches from the modern era, that is a ridiculous 8 out of the top 10 smallest victories we have been on the losing side (England having 0 in the top 10)!

I'm not sure if this means Australian's fight longer than others and bring results closer than they ever should have been, or if South Africa's choking tag needs to be revoked.

    neither tbh.

It's the fact that Australia have been pretty strong in the modern era, thus the few losses have been smaller, as opposed to big innings defeats.

we are talking about absolute marginal losses here though. The top 10 is a margin of 13 runs or less (the 10th being the loss last night).

    Great test,
I'll let you in on a little secret Pie Man. I am ridiculously superstitious when it comes to Ashes cricket, in 2005 I went through a bit of health kick and went off the piss for 6 months which coincided with the Ashes, with just a couple of exceptions I haven't had a drink through any of the subsequent series!!!...........had my last beer last Friday so am 10 days into 6 weeks on the wagon

I also haven't changed my jocks since Wednesday and have been wearing the same tattered old England ODI shirt from 2004 all week!!!

    Anyone else here this ridiculous??

    Edit:

Just for clarification I have washed the said Jocks in that time

What were you wearing whilst you were washing those jocks though?
