The Forumer's Ashes

Day One

Australia won the toss and chose to bat on a sunny day in Hove. Burridge made a confident start against the new ball, but came a cropper half an hour in when he was caught off Magoffin for 26. Lewis was troubled by Phlegm's pace, and the over after he was dropped by Dharan, the allrounder had Lewis caught and bowled. Cassidy remained watchful, and went to lunch unbeaten on 35, the visitors being 87/2.

Phlegm picked up a second wicket after the break as Super fell for 23. Spark made a similar contribution, his flamboyant but brief 34 standing in stark contrast to Cassidy's vigil. The opener brought up the first fifty of the innings from his 181st delivery. Nonetheless he was to fall after tea, the golden arm of Mork once again picking up the set batsman, and reducing Australia to the less than impressive 170/5.

Haddin became Anyon's first wicket when he spooned one to the boundary fielder for 14, but by this time Loblaw had begun to make an impact, taking the score past 200 with some fine hitting. He raised his half century within a few overs of the new ball being taken, though he couldn't stop wickets falling at the other end as Wayne departed for 10 and Coco for a duck, both against a fiery Dong. When Player was fetched out by a nasty bouncer in the dying light, the umpires called stumps on a day the visitors will be less than enthused with.

Last 3 innings I've been not out. I just need someone at the other end to hold the team together.

Day Two

Daemon Dong wrapped up Australia' first innings within 20 minutes of play, finishing with 4-46.

Beegee and Mork provided an untroubled start to the reply in the remainder of the session. The fifty stand was brought up in the 15th over as Haddin let through four byes, and lunch was taken with the score on 68/0. In the afternoon Beegee provided one chance off Stephen's bowling - put down by Lewis with the batsman on 45 - but soon after raised his fifty, followed by the hundred opening stand.

Coco's second spell yielded the breakthrough as Beegee was caught behind for 80, but Mork and Jansen safely took the second wicket stand unbeaten into the evening, with the former completing his half century. Wayne dismissed him for 60, but not before the 200 had come up and the Invitational XI were within sight of a lead.

Coco put together a good spell with the new ball, dismissing Goodwin for 8 and nearly claiming Teja with a very good lbw shout. Nonetheless Jansen was unruffled, and after reaching fifty he began to open his shoulders in the final hour. Teja supported him in a fifty stand that took the home side into the lead, with the Czech eyeing a hundred in the morning.

Day Three

Jansen completed his ton early in the morning. Though Stephen struck twice in the session, firstly to remove Jansen and then Phlegm for a brisk 22, Teja kept the lead building as he moved towards his own hundred. He was on 82* at the break, with the Invitational XI already having brought up the 400.

Dharan failed to make the most of a good position when Player had him lbw for his first wicket of the innings. Teja was still there though, and was happy to take his time while Dong played the shots. His hundred came up from 240 balls, with a lead of 200 approaching and four wickets still in hand.

He was eventually fetched out for 105, a Wayne delivery being caught sharply at short leg. Spin struck again as Lewis removed Magoffin for 5, but Dong continued to attack the wearing Australian bowlers on a still good pitch. The allrounder notched another not out to his name as he brought up the 500 with Panesar, before the new ball finally ended the innings. Australia would begin their second innings 243 behind.

The visiting openers survived the brief period before tea, but when Phlegm was thrown the ball at first change he struck with his very first ball to remove Burridge. The New Zealander would go on to put Australia on the brink in his fourth - first getting the promoted Super out for 16 before clipping Cassidy's off stump in the same over. Runs were coming - Spark lofting Phlegm over midwicket for six - but he couldn't stop taking wickets, Loblaw being the fourth to fall to reduce Australia to 79/4.

Haddin fell to Dong for 2 trying to hit his way out of trouble, and Lewis' experiment down the order came to an end for the same score. Spark was the only batsman looking composed, getting some fine strokes away as he remained unbeaten, but it seemed futile as the home side's lead now looked impossible to overcome. Australia left the field on 122/6, still 121 runs short of bowling again.

Day Four

Australia's subsidence was mercifully brief. Dong removed Wayne in the first over of the day, and in the second Phlegm ousted both Coco and Player in successive deliveries, taking his figures to a remarkable 6-40. Stephen lasted just long enough to allow Spark to reach a dignified half century, before Phlegm claimed him lbw. The tourists had been handed a thrashing.

Sussex Invitatiional XI won by an innings and 99 runs
