13th Thread - Who will be the Pantomime Villain?

They all secretly still hate Clarke as well.
I'm going to be very interested to see how Clarke is received now he's skip. I don't think he is disliked at all by most Eng fans. There was huge amount of disbelief then sympathy for him after his booing at the last SCG Ashes test......another embarrassing example of Aussie "support"

We're talking about two different things aren't we. Genuine 'pantomime villains' such as McGrath & Ponting vs objects of scorn like Johnson who simply have the piss taken because they're hopeless.

It's hard to think of many possibilities in the former category unless Clarke decides to regularly get arsey with the umpires or Siddle turns back the clock and tries to up the ante and reinvent himself as a latter day Merv Hughes. Haddin's struck me as a bit of a dick, but wicket keepers tend to be immune from this sort of thing.

Of the rest, lots of them can be excluded because they've never played against England before so we've never heard of them. Warner and Watson seem the likeliest bets.

That's why I think Patto is a big chance. He isn't afraid to disguise the fact he despises batsmen.

I can't comment either way because I don't get to see tests not involving England, so I've never seen him play. Is he inclined towards petulance when things don't go his way? That always helps.

Not really no. Things tend to go his way though, injuries aside, because he seriously is a gun.

But he's not averse to theatrics on occasion. ajdude's avatar is a pic of him pulling a head at one of the Indian batsmen a year and a bit back. I've also watched him bat and bowl in the nets. He's a pretty funny bloke tbh.

Nah, your talking about two very different situations there.

We gave Ponting **** because he's a knob, he gave us so many reasons to hate on him. No doubt that he was the prized wicket for the most part helped this relationship.

McGrath like Warne was so different, apart from being ****ing awesome against us they rarely gave us reason to dislike em. When we did give them some curry they took it with good humour then went and took michelles.......so soon gave up on that.

Despite Burgs rather amusing OP, my thoughts are, we'll pick on the weak and the ****e (Johnson, Tait for eg) We'll have a crack at the good and then give up if its not working(ala Warne McGrath), but we'll persevere with those we genuinely dislike (Ponting)

So based on that, Watson and Hughes for the weak and ****e, Patto for the good......up to him if we give up, or persevere on both weak and good counts.

Less petulance, more axe-murderer tendencies.

How was the pub? Ok?
Got sidetracked by more schooners at the pub I'm staying at, didn't make it out there lol. Got a friggin sore head this morning! Maybe next time.

Can throw Haddin into the mix for this too. Can't speak for other Eng fans but I ****ing can't stand the prick

I just still find it amusing that certain posters used to consider him not only anywhere near the same class as Prior, but even better than him. Time has of course proved that hilariously nonsensical.

He spent his best years as an understudy really. Think he'll have a good series. It's a bonus for him to be back and playing. That sort of thing often makes you look positively at things.

Yeah, Craig White was a better player after he collapsed in the street and they never really found out why. Pressure is off.

So is he a certain to take the gloves in the series then? Would seem odd to call him back and then not play him, especially with England having this late movement oddity for keepers which he has experience of?

If so, will Wade then play as a specialist bat / fill-in seamer for whichever one breaks down in each Test?
