2010/11 Ashes statistical quiddities
 

For those of us who get a warm glow when the record books are rewritten even slightly there's been a few moments of statty ecstacy so far in the series. A few I've noticed:

- In two tests no runs have been scored from #8

- Andrew Strauss has scored the lowest total in each England innings

- Five England batsmen have scored double tons in Oz ever and three are playing in this series (Tip Foster and Wally Hammond both unavailable for selection at time of posting)

- Xavier Doherty (who casual followers might assume is nicknamed "The Much Maligned") has taken more wickets than the combined efforts of Johnson, Hilfenhaus and Bollinger.

- Adelaide was the first live Ashes test (i.e. when the destination of the urn was in doubt) England have won in Oz since 86/87

- England's 620/5 dec in the 2nd test is their second highest total down under. In Sydney in 1928 the touring MCC took an extra 120.1 overs to score 16 more runs...

Alastair Cook needs 49 more runs in this series to score more runs than his previous 2 Ashes series scores combined (he played 10 matches, 19 innings 498 @ 26.21)

In this series he has 2 matches, 3 innings 450 @ 225.

He is already in the 43rd in top run scorers in a single series in Australia with (barring injury) 3 Tests to come.

15th in openers.

Set for one of the hugest tours ever.

England's combined batting average in this series has been 87.31.

The best ever average for any team during a 5+ match series is England's 65.63, against Pakistan in 1962.

The best ever during an Ashes series is Australia's 57.86 in 1989.

At 2h01, GIMH sets the record for the longest time needed to come up with a comeback :happy:

The Australian fielders and Haddin have caught 8 chances in the two Tests. A scan of the Cricinfo commentary reveals 9 dropped catches.

Cook and Trott have the highest 2nd wicket partnership (329) for English batsman on an Australia ground.

Doug Bollinger currently has an Ashes bowling average of 130. This is the second worst Ashes average* of any Australian pace bowler behind Harry Alexander, who took match figures of 1/154 in his only Test in 1933.

*Ignoring "infinite"

This is only the second time an Australian has made 5 consecutive fifties against England.

The other time? Michael Hussey, 2006-7.

England picked up as many wickets in 40.4 overs today as Australia have picked up in their last 304 overs.

All three of England's ever-present bowlers currently have 11 wickets for the series
