*Official* Third Test at the WACA

Gotta feel sorry for both Beer and Hauritz at this point. Has Hauritz murdered someone, that we don't know about? Surely he's the best option they have at the moment.
Reckon Hauritz and Punter have had a massive falling out to the extent that Ponting won't bowl him.

Was the same story with McGain and Krejza. We are poorer for it.

I hope Beer does well, but there is a pretty good reason he's never been on the radar.

Well I read that they sense Beer could become a really good spinner in the near future. I don't know why though.

Hughes is very lucky to get in one feels after a very poor domestic season. Hope he rises to the occasion, he's known as a big match performer.
Hughes was the only option AFAIC, unless Hilditch decided to come out of retirement and open for Australia....

He only started playing cricket at domestic level 2 months ago.
Yeah, but thats the point - he's 26 and has only been playing at the FC level for 2 months, he's never been on the radar because, well, he's not that good I guess is the kindest way of saying it. Jeez I hope I'm wrong though.

True, I'd absolutely love to be eating my words when this is all said and done, but that probably won't happen.

Also reeling, Dussey. That entire family must roll over and groan after these dudes get baggy greens for doing nothing in particular.

Sort of - if he'd been a specialist spinner he probably would have played by now. He's unfortunate that he played in a time where we had a decent middle order and there wasn't room, and now that bus has gone. Plus, he made too many of his runs in the County championship rather than the Shield - ie. at the wrong times.

TumTum: Please take your posts to the testing forum, it's for the learners...

It seems like Ponting sure has had a problem with all the spinners he's had under him, including Warne.

Wouldn't really expect a team as professional as Australia to decide based on personal prejudices given the situation they're in ATM.

I do think Ponting may want to consider giving up the captaincy. There is no shame in that - Tendulkar was captain for a bit, couldn't do it, stepped down.

Maybe Watson? Smith for SA and Dhoni for India - very young when they became captains - truly paid off. Salman Butt also "paid off", but in a rather different way.

You stole my frigging idea TumTum.

2009/10 - 15 matches, 53 wickets at 15.9, econ of 2.2
2008/09 - 16 matches, 28 wickets at 19.3, econ of 2.5
2007/08 - 14 matches, 39 wickets at 13.1, econ of 2.6
2006/07 - 19 matches, 43 wickets at 20.4, econ of 3.2

Beer's stats in Premier League cricket over the last four seasons, solid. I wouldn't write him off just yet..

If Hauritz' continued omission is the fault of Ponting, then Ponting really should be axed as captain. Last I checked, he was the captain, not a selector. The reason that they keep those positions separate is so that the captain cannot keep friends in the side and people they don't like out.

Beer's selection was dire. It has been said a number of times over the last few pages, but it sends all of the wrong messages to both the players and the English.

Wrong Message #1 - don't get Ponting angry or you will never be selected
Wrong Message #2 - years of performance at shield level will get you overlooked . Selectors want players they can pluck out of obscurity to make themselves look like visionaries on the off chance that the player does step up.

If Beer plays at the WACA he will be slaughtered, which is a shame as it will probably be the end of his career. Spinners need to be nurtured, not thrown into the deep end for a single Ashes test. I mean O'Keefe was the choice if the selectors wanted a) someone who was left armed, b) someone who was young and c) someone who had demonstrated ability. Hauritz was the guy to pick if you wanted someone who a) had a good record at the WACA, b) was in form and c) has proven that he can step up to the international level.

Beer is a desperation pick and a wrong one. Even if he comes out and bags a 19 wicket haul, he still would have been the wrong pick because there has been no indicators that he is capable of doing so at this stage in his career.

It is really hard to support Australia when the selectors keep making the wrong moves time after time.

And today was such a good day until I found out about this crap.

I'm thinking just the two, I can't recall anymore but it does ring a bell haha.

EDIT: Oh wait, that chatroom heh.

Keen to see what the ODI squad's gonna look like, will probably see a few changes I guess. Apparently they're choosing Beer looking ahead to the world cup, so he may be a fixture.

Ponting probably thinks what we have been thinking all this time, Hauritz just leaks runs and can't take wickets. No matter how he performs at domestic level, you can feel it will be the same old with him.

Trying out random unjustified selections is not worse than going back to proven failures tbh.

Too late, if Beer plays I will not watch this Test and actually don't care if Aussies lose.

I was around when the Peter Taylor selection occurred and at the time it was thought they called the wrong guy as Mark Taylor was expected....now it's claimed that Greg Chappell spotted him as something special, which it appears he's done again with Beer. A total WTF moment and I feel for Hauritz and O'Keefe who must be devastated....as must Khawaja and Ferguson if Beer plays...if he doesn't, then Smith's selection makes sense.

To be fair, Peter Taylor was my first true cricketing bowler hero (with AB being the first batting hero). Absolutely loved watching him bowl.
