    Paine gets call-up

A run of injuries to Australia's touring wicket-keepers has seen Tasmanian gloveman Tim Paine called up as back-up for the fifth and deciding Ashes test at The Oval.

While Brad Haddin is expected to be fit to take his spot behind the stumps after returning for the fourth Test at Headingly, his back-up Graham Manou is struggling with a hand injury that would put him in serious doubt should anything happen to Haddin on the eve of the Test.

The situation looked to be initially resolved with Chris Hartley called up to the squad, but Australia has now opted to bring in Paine, who is due to be part of the squad for the one-day and Twenty20 squad following the Test series.

"Tim will arrive a few days early as a precautionary measure should Graham Manouís hand injury not recover sufficiently to be available as a reserve wicket-keeper for Thursdayís fifth Ashes Test at The Oval," team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said.

"Brad Haddin is expected to be fully fit for selection in this match."

Obviously this shows Wade isn't in the plans as much as I thought he was.

Its pretty clear that Haddin would play at the Oval, so I'm not reading too much into it, Paine is the part of the limited overs squad, so they probably would have felt its better for him to join the squad a little earlier than scheduled and get used to the conditions, and in the unlikely event both Haddin and Manou aren't able to play in the 5th test, then he might fill in for them.

So, Haddin, Manou and Hartley have now all featured, and there remains an outside chance that Paine will as well... what a tour to be a wicketkeeper on.

Makes sense really. All Manou has going for him is 1 season of OK form, guys like Paine and Wade are really the future after Haddin retires.
    Inappropriate signature.

Paine is a pretty shoddy keeper and neither has he done much with the bat in the FC format, so obviously he shouldn't be considered for test cricket at this point of time.

With the bat, yes; two seasons, by the way, averaging around 40 average with the bat. has always been a good 'keeper, though.

Paine, on form with the gloves, shouldn't be anywhere near the Test side. His bat form has deserted him a bit too. Quite like him as a bat when he's going, though.
