Voges was in Townsville last weekend for Australia A vs Pakistan A. He top scored with 80-odd.

Actually he didn't top score Krejza got 100.

God will hate me for this, but Mark Cosgrove is averaging 70+. Admittedly it is Divi 2, but don't Glamorgan play at Cardiff...?
Recently broke his finger. Unlikely to play out the rest of the season with Glamorgan, as he was only a temporary stand in I believe for Gibbs. I believe he will continue playing club cricket and 2nd XI cricket for Glamorgan.

Not that Cosgrove should be anywhere near Australian honours.

He should be sent home, and another batsman sent over there to replace him, imo.

Aren't the tests back-to-back? If so, he's realistically out of the first two tests, isn't he? There's no opportunity for him to present a case for selectionthen until the third test FFS.
I think sending him home would be too harsh, but given his history of injuries, atleast a shadow player should be send as back-up, it can be Hodge or David Hussey (who is currently playing for Notts in England).

David Hussey has a magnificent domestic record, and especially in England. There's no reason why he shouldn't be next in line. Hodge would obviously be the other one. The others however, not so much.

Dussey has done NOTHING to inspire any confidence in his ability to step up a class irrespective of how many runs he has scored in English CC

IMO, Hodge is a faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better player but politically on the nose

Yes of course, but is not making a mistake a mental error?
Errr, tough one. It's debateable whether being crap at cricket is classed as a mental affliction or not, but I don't think it's generally what people refer to when they use the word.

The way I see it you can get out two different ways in cricket. Either due to a technical deficiency, such as a tendency to walk across to off stump too far or leaving a gap between bat and pad when defending, which can be worked on and ironed out in the nets. The other way is mental, such as poor shot selection, getting stuck in the crease because you fear a short ball, getting stuck too rigidly into a defensive 'must not get out mode' when on a poor run on form etc. These are mental deficiencies which you cannot really work at in the nets so easily. That's what I was referring to when I said Hooper and Lara are roughly equal in the technical aspect, but Lara was streaks ahead mentally (add Bell in to the Hooper category too if you like).

Seriously (i.e. no further critiques of his ability are required), why is McDonald on the tour?

If they have no intention of playing him, then his position would've been better being taken by an extra batsman or spinner

Its either a paid holiday for a job done vs SA or an excuse not to pick the politically undesirable in the initial squad

Good point.

Bugger me that team bats deep though.

Watson being unfit probably kills off Hauritz's Test chances.

WIth Watson at six, we could just have three specialist quicks, and then play Haurtiz.

By contrast, with no Watson, we'd be loathe to go in with just the three quicks (particularly as Clark and Lee don't have too many miles in their legs).

Anyway, shocked Ronny isn't playing tonight. Would rather him in the team than North.

It is a bit of a surprise, considering he's over there in the squad. Can only assume it means they don't intend playing him in at least the first two tests.

Yeah, I've always been confident that Ronny's batting would improve - I think he scored 70 odd in his last Test innings. I think his bowling is definitely serviceable. I like the fact he keeps an end tied up, which is something that Australia have really been missing since the two great men retired.
