Yeah but he's going to be more likely to suck it up and play through the injury if it is a big series like the Ashes.

That isn't neccessarily a good thing though. Pietersen playing when he'd do best not to play is going to damage, not improve, England's chances.

Best he got the operation now and was fully fit for SA. His form was crap anyway so it wont be as big a loss than it could be. Bell is more than good enough to do well vs this Australian attack imho.
