How many for Ponting?
Ricky Ponting currently has 524 runs this Ashes series, and barring two horrible tests he'll pass 600 pretty easily. This has only been done 17 times in Ashes history, and 7 of those series involved more than 5 tests. Any guesses as to how high he'll finish? My guess is 5th place, between 750 and 800.
Here's the list. Those marked with asterisks were in series of more than 5 tests. Weirdly, three players got past 600 in 1970/71. The only player to do it in the last decade is Vaughan. 974 - DG Bradman (1930) 905 - WR Hammond (1928/29) 839* - MA Taylor (1989) 810 - DG Bradman (1936/37) 758 - DG Bradman (1934) 734 - H Sutcliffe (1924/25) 732* - DI Gower (1985) 696 - AR Morris (1948) 680 - DG Bradman (1946/47) 673* - GA Gooch (1993) 662 - JB Hobbs (1911/12) 657* - G Boycott (1970/71) 648* - JH Edrich (1970/71) 633 - MP Vaughan (2002/03) 627* - KR Stackpole (1970/71) 623 - M Slater (1994/95) 608* - GS Chappell (1974/75) |
I can't see him getting higher than 4th (810 runs) or any lower than 7th (732 runs). I'll say he'll score 770 runs which will put him in 5th. That would be an incredible acheivement.

I'll go for 820. The man's a bloody machine.
|
I think he'll come in just behind Bradman ;)
[Which could be > 905, 758, 734 or 673] Seriously though, I think 760 may be on the cards (5th) |
Between 2nd and 3rd, 839 - 905, hopefully. Don't know how realistic that is though.

He'll hit one more century and be absent for one (either winning by an innings or promoting McGrath to finally hit the winning runs). Therefore I think he'll just pass 700 and finish somewhere between Morris and Gower.

975.

250 more in the next two tests,

I really wouldn't like to say. I'll guess about 730. |
525, imo.

Anywhere below David Gower, I'm fine.

They added one on to replace the one that was washed out - leaving 6 matches actually played, that wash out also resulted in the first ever ODI being played. It should also be noted that the asterix next to Boycott as scoring the runs in more than 5 Tests is not true in that he only played in 5 of the 6 matches that took place because he broke his arm before the Final Test. |
