But last Ashes, Fletcher wasn't the sole selector.

Can't believe that England don't have a touring selector...

Fair enough, but he seemed to have a disproportionate influence at the time. Maybe it was just my perception though.

Here's a couple of articles about the condition of the pitches in recent series in Australia. Some interesting observations and factors discussed.

Illingworth on Fletcher & the price of eggs

The video is well worth watching. Some classic home-spun Yorkshire bitterness. A lot of truth in the majority of what he says, but some of us remember the squad Illy picked for 1994/95....

Sadly I'm not actually George Chuter, so no it isn't.

I'm far uglier.

I just like the pic 'cos it makes him look like someone you wouldn't want to babysit for you.

Gideon Haigh on The Big Ship's 5-0

From today's Guardian.

An interesting read for those with an interest in the history of the great game. It sounds as if our team spirit back then was as good as it is (allegedly) this time round. Haigh says of our captain,

Johnny Douglas, with his glistening, centre-parted hair, was an acerbic martinet, informing his all-rounder Percy Fender en route to Australia: "You know, Fender, there is no man in England whose bowling I would rather bat against than yours; and there is no batsman in England I would rather bowl against either."
