I was wondering whether the processor overheating is connected to the battery being old.

I have a Dell Inspiron BTW.
I have the same problem. It was worse when I had Vista installed. I upgraded it to win 7. Now laptop works fine for about 3hrs, so i can finish one movie without shutting down. Still want to know if replacing battery will solve the problem. Mine is 2.5 yrs old Dell inspiron.
