England, Belgium, Tunisia and Panama. Should sail through in second.

Disappointing lack of a Group of Death.

Gropu E looks as close as we got. Wherever Serbia ended up would always look the stiffest one though.

"this was Argentina’s heaviest defeat in the group stage of a World Cup since losing 6-1 to Czechoslovakia in 1958. It is also the first time they have failed to win either of their opening two matches at a World Cup for 44 years. Sampaoli’s players, in other words, were creating history here" - The Guardian's Stuart James on Croatia's 3-0 dicking of the South Americans

England’s R16 game against Poland Colombia Senegal or Japan. Serious opportunity for them.

Aye, though having been in Serbia’s qualifying group they’re pretty terrible in practice. Group D is alright too if Nigeria get a decent side together. A and H are tight-but-shite.

Yeah and a quarter final exit would keep everyone happy and Southgate would get time to bring more youngsters in in the next campaign.

Argentina and Nigeria always get drawn in the same group.

England always go on about bringing youngsters in, then gets to the World Cup and there'll be Joe Hart, Cahill, Henderson etc. stinking up the place. Although to be fair there'll be young players in the team by default.

Not as bad as some draws we’ve had. Never easy for our blokes but there’s a bit of hope with this group I guess.

Yeah it’s not the worst to have a decent third team because it means your rivals can take points off each other. If France beat everyone then one win and a decent goal difference might see you over the line. Whereas if you’re stuck with something like Spain, Portugal, Iran then there’s a decent chance you end up needing 7 points.

Though really the big difference is whether you get Russia/Poland or anyone else as the first seed.

I went along to the Italy match on Tuesday. Birthday treat for my son, and the first time I'd been to the new Wembley stadium.
For all the fuss about the penalty being given due to VAR, it was the right decision and Italy could easily have won anyway if they hadn't missed an open goal with that free header about 15 minutes in.
For all that, a few random thoughts were:
Sterling's improved. I thought he was our best player, actually, which isn't something I thought I'd ever write.
Our ability to pass the ball from the back is something I haven't seen from us very often in the last 50 years.
The team is probably heading in the right direction, and we may even be one of the stronger sides in the next two tournaments. But not yet.

The other thing that struck me was the decor on the way in (Entrance 'D', since you ask). It was Barry Davies' commentary for Shearer's 2nd goal against Holland in the 1996 euros. Good goal, and a decent performance. But it was a group game in a tournament where we went out in the semis. It just reinforced the point that other countries would be able to find something more auspicious to celebrate at their national stadium.

    Around early June.

June-July will be amazing.. World Cup + French Open/Wimbledon + English summer cricket.
