Depends on the team; if not for the ultra long batting line-up, OZ may not have made it past the Super 8's (assuming you count Clarke as one of the batters).

I'm not saying it's never better to have seven batsmen, the semi-final was the perfect example of that. And Australia have some excellent fifth bowling options anyway in Watson and Dussey. But I think in the long run the five-bowler approach will win more matches for most sides.

If you're relying on a part timer as your 5th bowler, then you'd better pray that your other 4 bowlers are doing the job.
Australia's pace trio didn't step up in either the semi or the final, and as a result the part timers got destroyed. A 5th bowler is more important than a 7th batsman. Mussey got 17 off 10 balls in the final - Australia might have had a much more defendable total if Mussey had got in to bat earlier. |

Oh, absolutely agree a decent 5th is a higher percentage move than than 7 batters. The Aussies could have avoided needing them had they not picked Clarke at all. Would have taken the pressure of the part-timers too because Watto especially got spanked even in the big wins. Picking Clarke, though, necessitated shoring up the batting.

I see a few teams have put Watson in it, don't think he deserves a spot at all. |
