FIFA World Cup Standings

BBC Sport - Football - England slump to worst World Cup ranking

Bit daft obviously. But Australia > New Zealand apparently.

Argentina in 5th is generous, they should be behind Brazil and maybe even Paraguay/Ghana. They won matches on some gifted goals against poor opposition.

Is it not just based on matches won and goals scored though? Argentina won more games than Brazil, assumed that was why they were put above them.

Bit disingenous to call it our worst ever performance. Basic maths says 13/32 is better than 11/16 in 58 or 8/13 in 50.

Basic maths says finishing 13th is better than finishing 11th and 8th?

For the slowpokes, 13/32 is the top half, 11/16 and 8/13 aren't. Therefore the first is actually a better position.

To make an exaggerated point: Arsenal were 3rd/20 in the Premier League, but 3rd/92 in the Football League. Just because you include more teams in the ranking - presumably worse - doesn't make that third rank any better, despite the percentage coming out better.

Nevertheless, definitely better than 30-oddth (known as did not qualify) in 1994.

But that's a load of cobblers because it's a crap example that has no relevance to what has happened.
