Italy and Germany beating us at the last two WCs were both massive boilovers.

Can't believe how unlucky we've been..

The West Germany one always seemed possilly the most amazing.

Hungary seemed unstoppable and had beaten Germany 8-3 earlier in the tournament.

Final itself is ridiculous with the Germans 2-0 down after 10 minutes.

Typical Germans always stopping the best teams winning.

Portugal 7-0 North Korea. Yeah, Korea is crap, but still.........we didn't expect that they'd thrash them by that much!

1970, 1972, 1982, 1990, & 1996 spring immediately to mind.

Going back to 1954, I read something astonishing the other day about syrringes being found in the German dressing room after the game + rumours of fitness enhancing substances.

Five Slovaks have played in a World Cup final though.

To take another first-time participant, Croatia 3-0 Germany >> Slovakia 3-2 Italy imo.

Think I read somewhere 7/11 Euro 76 winners where Slovaks too, including matey who chipped in the winning pen.

wiki disagrees. Says he didn't move from Prague until 33. (Well, except for taking that pen, of course.)

Am sure quite a few were Slovaks, however.

Living in Prague all his life wouldn't necessarily make him Czech though.

Certainly. The fact that a lot of them turned out to be decent players and South Korea have turned out to be a decent side has led to history being rewritten to some extent, but at the time this was an absolutely huge shock.

I was born in a grey area which allows me to pick and choose at will.

(Have to have 3 different birth certificates to hand in order to get a passport for example)

Most of the football world is definitely still reeling from that one.
