Haha, no worries mate. Didn't think it was harsh, it was my way of agreeing with you.

Fortunately I seem to avoid most of the threads he frequents here it seems.

Just posting smart-arse one-liners without offering your take on the issue isn't helping anyone Benchmark. You Australians, sitting at home practicing your swear faces in the mirror...

I'd agree with that if people also agree that the New Zealand defender who gave away the penalty yesterday should have been sent off - after all, holding your opponent back so he can't get a clear run at a corner is cheating as well.

For all the outrage about diving, I've seen very little condemnation of the "tackle" which saw Elano stretchered off. Until people are prepared to condemn acts of thuggery that risk injuring players as much as they condemn diving, I won't take any anti-diving crusade seriously.

The slight tugging of a persons shirt is not as big of a hindrance as playing the rest of the match with one less player.

Yeah, I don't really see how you can compare the two things. Tugging on someone's shirt is against the rules and should be a foul, but it's a couple of seconds of hindrance for one player, and it's already something referees look for and attempt to punish.

Diving and winning a penalty or getting another player sent off can decide matches, is absurdly common and also completely contrary to the spirit of the game, which I don't really think a physical competition for the ball is, even if one player might controvene the rules in the process.

Hmm, I think GF has a point. Most dives aren't with the intention of getting an opponent sent off - obviously we see them, like last night - they are generally to try and earn a free kick or penalty, basically to try and earn a goal illegitimately. Given that a pull of the shirt is normally an attempt to prevent a goal illegitimately, a comparison can be made.

It's also worth noting that there are lots of other sports where people simulate for fouls or whatever and it's always considered to be a dirty way to play the game, whereas giving away free kicks/fouls is pretty inevitable and part of a dedicated contest.

You're meant to try and win the ball, if you go too far in an effort to do so you'll give away a free kick. You're not meant to pathetically throw yourself to the ground in an attempt to win a free kick instead of trying to win the ball. I really don't consider them comparable at all.

I haven't read the rest of the thread so I don't know if anyone has brought this up, but sometimes it's necessary to go down a bit easy. Just yesterday I was playing a game for my own club and I am a solid/strong guy and very hard to get off my feet, but this guy tried to run right through me with his elbow up. I ended up staying on my feet but felt like I had been punched. It was an obvious foul but because I had stayed on my feet the ref didn't call it, unbelievably. The same thing goes for pros in many situations; as they're clearly impeded but the ref doesn't blow the whistle unless an obvious foul is committed or the player goes down.

Agree with a lot of what the thread starter has said though.
